Radar & Laser Detectors

I haven't got one myself, but have a look here...
http://www.speed-trap.co.uk/Home/Menu1.htm
and here...
http://www.speed-trap.co.uk/Home/Menu1.htm
for details on all the speed trap systems, how they work and what you can do, including reviews of detectors etc.

But bear in mind that they will not help you against the S.P.E.C.S. systems which do not use radar. These are currently set up on the M6 wherever they put roadworks and use digital imaging to take photos of the number plates at set distances and calculate your avaerage speed. Interestingly one of the sites above mentions an upgrade to the S.P.E.C.S. system which will allow it to calculate distances between cars and get people for driving too close..

Speed cameras and the UK speed limits are a nightmare at the moment and set to get worse with new laws set to be passed to give the revenue from cameras directly back to the camera departments rather than via the Treasury.

This site gives the location (allegedly) of every Gatso camera in the UK...

Barakka...

PS- I know someone who got caught the other week doing 35 in a 30 zone and had to do a half day driving course with the police ! And that was someone with over 20 years driving experience and never had points !

I went to visit my folks at the weekend and got zapped by a police man standing behind a tree.
You could see him clearly on the inside lane , but the outside with other cars - not a chance.
Was doing between 50-60mph on a 40 - waiting for the fine.

Speed in this country sucks

Since owning a Bravo, I am now the owner of 6 Lovlely points on my license. The first set I got was on a duel carriage on a sunny day doing 60 in a 40. Second set was a copper sat behind a fence with a for sale sign straight infront of him. Couldn't see him or any sign of a cop car. I was doing 39 in a 30. Get this my mum got court doing 80 in a 50 on the A1. She got the same as me 3 points and £60 fine, figure that one out.

I have spoke to a chap (from the RAF) about these speed detectors, he said that for you to generate the same channels used in the gatso guns would need a box the same size as a PS2 on your dash board. Even then you would not cross the same bandwiths used. They keep changing them. Bastards or what.

Speed Limit

I prob shouldn't declare this but I have a coupla mates in the Force and, apparently, they have an allowance of 10% on the speed limit for overtaking.

Obviously a very old ruling and obviously, not the owners of some very nippy Fiats!

My dad bought one to about 6 months ago.... then took it back a month later.

It worked ok on the motorways. How ever as soon as you got in to a built up area. You had to turn it off, as practically anything set it off. Very annoying noise aswell.

Not sure what the model number was but it was one of the snoopers. it was one of the middle spec Snoopers. May be the more pricey ones are better but I couldn't comment on those as I've never used them.

Speed Allowance

Don't worry it's not a secret it's standard...

The usual rule is 10+2 which is 10% plus 2 mph...
so 35 in a 30, 68 in a 60, 79 in a 70...

The 10% they must allow, but the 2 mph on top is down to the particular force in question. The person I know that got done (who I mentioned above) was caught in Lancashire, where they've now dropped the +2 so you just get 10% :(

Right in my line of work

At work we test in-car systems and we recently do a few tests on a number of speed detection devices.

Unfortunately it's kind of confidential what our findings were. You'll have to ask me when we all meet up (if ever) (Hint-Auto Italia Day, Donnington Park Aug 31st and Sept 1st).

Personally wouldn't waste my money on one.

79mph?

After a great amount of research me and me mate Laura have come to the conclusion that to set off the speed cameras on the dualer up here you have to be going 82 mph, why this is I have no idea but its a fact as we have now tried and tested it at least 10 times on at least 4 different cameras. But I wouldnt recommend you lot trying it (Laura is a dodgy character with a fast motor that isnt registered in her name and if it was she would be banned for life several times over, especially for that time she ran up the back of the cops doing 85)

s5

iv got an s5, i got it for free and would not have paid the three hundred odd quid for it! i still use it but i still have trouble trusting it as iv seen people getting flashed by certain cameras but the snooper does not detect anything? it says in the manual that it will only pick up cameras that actualy have film in so presumably it is just a flashing camera, but i dont fancy trying to justify myself against the pigs claiming my snooper said it was ok :)
so verdict: worth having, has sved me a few times but i wouldnt spend that much money on one i could not afford it!!!
psiv heard if you put a compact disc somewhere on the rear of your car (even in the window) it will reflect the flash of a speed camera over axposing the film so your plate can not be read :)

Dont rely on one

By all means buy one but dont forget

1. They only work on the action of the trap. If you are the one being trapped, its too late!

2. In built up areas, automatic doors will set them off

3. Speeding is breaking the law (yeah OK I will **** off on that one!)

4. £200 of Lawyers fees are cheaper

5. Act responsibly and you will have a just case. If for example you do 40mph passed a school at 08:50 in the morning you should be instantly banned for 6 months. Do 70 in a 60 and you will probably get away with it.

I am just as to blame on open roads and those who know me here and my plight with the courts last year, I have also been know for moments of what can only be called absolute **** take of traffic police (and I got away with it!)

Just as importantly leanr the law and your rights, i.e. ask for calibration certificate of hand held and vehicle mounted detectors as if they havent got it then you can walk away etc etc.

Also, instead of paying £300 for a M Mouse detector, take an advanced driving course or a police driving course and learn to speed safely.

Lastly fit cruise control. It is excellent in 30 and 40 limits as well as motorways. There are also devices that give out beeps at set speeds (Most German cars have them fitted as standard)

Thats my contribution, sorry if you fell asleep getting this far!

thanks for all the response

I know about the problems with laser guns (the device only beeps at you when the gun is pointed at you) so its a bit late. But i drive a lot at night on roads i dont know, and im afraid that i'll forget that im doing 40 in a 30, and go through a speed trap and get 3 points and 60 quid fine.
Also the device will make me more confadent to cruse a 80 on the motorways, as i cannot bare doing 70.
.........And i wont buy one for 300 quid as you can get the things for about 150 - 200 from e-bay.

Although im worred that if i get one i will end up just driving a lot faster and only slow down when the thing beeps at me, and i dont want to drive like that,
Im also allready a targot in my car, 18 years old - nice modded bravo - does not go well together.

how much is it to get cruse contoller - who fits it?

Bought one years ago and used it quite regularly for about 6 months and realised it only picked up about half of the cameras - did save me a few times though as it picks up the hand held cameras about a mile away.

My girlfriend was dissapointed when I first used it as we followed a police car and it wasn't going off!

Pick a good one up in America for about £70.
