What is involved in changing the CamShaft bearing shells?

What would be the most likely reason for these to fail if oil is serviced every 6 months and the car being used only for motorway driving?

Thanks,
(search showed nothing:()

metal fragments in the head causing damage??

hmmm, i did check just the other day, it all looked clean, oil covered everything...
I wonder if the timing belt tension could cause them to wear unevenly resulting in them failing?

Dose the cam shaft rattle around?? Don't get how its failed.

The cam shaft pulley wobbles every so often (while engine is running), making a metal knocking sound. (can't move the pulley myself, feel solid. Listening to the engine via a metal rod i hear a grinding sound, hence i though bearings or shells.

The car drives fine but at idle you get this knocking every so often. not all the time though... not very loud either.

it uses this stuff called oil

Wooow, what is this new invention :p

I understand that i uses oil, but i meant the Camshaft will need to have something at the end holding it in place, i.e bearings or shells. If you had just a shaft spinning on the engine block it wouldn't last very long, even with oil.
Surely the camshaft will be sitting on something allowing the oil to form a film around the moving parts. Hence i though there would be either a bearing or some shells.

At min there will be an oil seal? Otherwise the oil would just come out the end.
I couldn't see very much with the timing belt cover and cam cover removed, it has brackets holding the cam shaft in place with what looked like shells...

What exp do you have with the mk1 engine?

Yes your right, no bearings or shells. Pretty poor design...

The knocking has now stopped after topping the oil up with Castrol Magnetec 10W40

The Shell Oil i was trying appears to be pretty crap also(n)
I would recommend using Castrol Magnatec 10W40 for the mk1 punto 1.1L over the Shell Helix HX7 10w40(y)
