Technical Punto 2 Uno engine transplant

Should go in but you'd be better off looking at the 1242 fire engine ;)

8V or 16V:D (y)

Edit.. your Uno sounded like it has the older gearbox which has wet cups, and an under car gear selector. I don't know if the Punto drive shafts will fit in the Uno.

If they don't I'd guess you'd keep the gearbox you have as it should fit to the larger fire engines, or acquire the later Uno 999cc drive shafts which I'm guessing would be right for the 1108's gearbox. guess who has a set in their garage :).

The in car selector setup would be needed if you were changing the box, and the centre console that meets the floor. Is yours cable or hydraulic clutch? This mey need converting too.

It can be done, and perhaps with the 999cc ECU and electrics. the Uno did come with an 1108 option factory fitted. it would be an easier swap, but whereas the challenge in that?

It wouldnt make much sense as you could swap a 1108 Uno engine in & not have the agro of rewiring the Uno to fit the punto lump.

If you were going to do a transplant for more power, stick to Louis advice & put a significantly more powerful one in, but it wont be a straight swap as it will need a heap of new wiring (& an ABS signal is needed to run most, if not all of the super FIRE lumps).

The 1108 and 1242 8v Punto engines can run off the Uno i.e. ignition and throttle body system with no other mods required other than an exhaust spacer for the 1242. Only the 16v versions will require substantial wiring and fueling mods ;)

Hmmmmm
OK I'll forget that idea
The whole premise was that the existing 999's 5 speed box is tired
[hydraulic clutch + top change + rods under the floor]
It has covered 89K miles and has little synchro left on 3rd gear
I found a direct replacement in a breakers but that had 80+k miles on it as well
and they wanted £65!
Then I saw a Punto box on eBay and wondered......
The eBayer also had the engine as well
Both had starting bids prices of just £4.99 (y)
But as its not an easy direct swap for my rather tired 'box I'll stick with double-de-clutching ;)
Thanks for all the great advice guys
