My TA 4x4 has started having what I can only describe as pulsed acceleration. Sometimes it can be quite subtle but other times it almost feels like a misfire but rather than a drop in revs it’s a boost. It can make for a jerky ride. Gets worse as the car gets hot. The turbo seems to kick in on and the car is definitely not sluggish or going into limp mode. No warning lights. But when you accelerate (particularly in 1st and 2nd) up hill or just putting your foot down, instead of getting a smooth power increase it comes in waves. Could this be the turbo on the way out? Wastegate issue? Anyone had anything similar and anything I can try or look at that might help?

Bear with me here…
My 2013 Land Rover Defender did something similar. If, like my Landy, your TA Turbo doesn’t have a wastegate, but instead an electric motor that varies the turbo vane angle, then it could be that motor (the ’turbo actuator’) that’s failing. On the Landy (basically a Transit), that was available as a separate bit from independent turbo specialist

Isn't there a waste gate as the bushes wear and require turbo overhaul? Maybe this pulsing is symptomatic? There's a thread about this on here somewhere I think.

I've seen something similar in my car for the last 10,000 km. During acceleration, starting from the third gear, there is a short power pause at about 3000 ppm. I think this is due to the large backlash in the westgate axis of the turbocharger.
TA 4x4, 2013, 104,000 km.
