prostart ignition wire connection?

hi there,

i have just bought a prostart kit which is a push button ignition system (gives a racing style engine start button on dash). i can figure out how to wire most of it in but come stuck when trying to figure which of the many wires on the ignition switch (key barrell) is the 15 or IG terminal. then haynes manual does say there is a 15 terminal but by the looks of it it is either not connected to anything or the manual is useless (more likley the latter). therefore does anyone know which of the wires it should be? there is a block of three wires which are heavy core and then another three with a fourth on its top which are all skinnier wires.

please help!!

p.s.

forgot to mention...

car is a 1997 1.8hlx

thanks.

Why not just wire the switch to the small wire on the starter.
And put the ignition on by the key.
only you can start the car then .Or am I missing some thing..??
at least the car will be the same apart from the switch for starting .

sort of...

the prostart is a maxpower style mod so is more for looks than function. what it does is this:

put the key into the ignition and turn as normal but stop at the point where ignition is on but engine is not started. now you press the button on the prostart which just does the sam ething as turning the key forward to the next step.

i uses a lot of wires to do this. one wire goes to the starter motor solenoid which kicks the thing into life, another wire goes to the altenator so it knows when the car is started and doesnt continue, a third wire connects to the ignition switch so that you cant start the car without the key in and a fourth wire connects the earth for everything.

the prostart has a light which illuminates when the ignition is on but the engine is not running, this is why it connects to the altenator.

i have found the 15 connector on the ignition switch (it is the orange heavy cable) so that is OK, i now only need to know which wire is the connector for the altenator or battery light on the dashboard (this is not too critical)

thanks,

Riclemus.

Re: sort of...

wats the point of this mod lol
if u have to put ur key in anyway and turn it, u might as well turn it a little more to start the engine up, and put a little sticker on the dash saying prostart lol :)

amit ;)

Try this:

1. Take the small trigger wire off the alternator. If the charger light on the dash goes off you've found the trigger wire.

2. Re-fit the trigger wire adding another so that there are two wires from the same terminal.

3. Take the second wire to the switch through a bulb. If there is power going into the switch it should work. When the engine is turned off that wire is an earth and when running it's live, the light goes out.

Basically, just simple electronics, saves butchering your loom. I hope this helps :)

P.S make sure you use reasonably sized cable. The same size as the first, original, wire.
