had a mate look at my hgt and he said that my brake pipes were corroded, any ideas what the cost involved is ? car due its mot soon

Which pipes in particular? They may look corroded on the surface but it doesn't mean they are.

merry christmas and a happy new year tom. how did i know you would be the first to reply. not entirely sure get my car from my mate tom and i will find out which pipes. its due in for its mot next weeek so i want it to pass first time. driving my mates merc while hes got my fiat. give my fiat anytime.

Just stick it in for its MOT and see what happens.

Unfortunately cars have been using plastic covered steel brake pipes for the last 10-15 years. They used to use copper. Cost is the main issue, copper costs a fortune compared to steel.

cheers tom.
i will get my car back tom, and hopefully theres no other major problems. otherwise i will be back tomorrow for another education lesson.

respect Tom, your knowledge is right up there with the best.

Re MOT (Brake pipes)

Hi

Clean pipes with a soft wire brush or stiff tooth brush, it will be mostly dirt that will come off and will improve appearance. Then COVER THICKLY all the pipes that you can see with black 'Hammerite' underseal, use the spray, or paint it on if easier. It's best to carry this out several days before the test, but it's not essential. Then take it to an MOT test centre ONLY:.. NOT to a test centre with a garage/workshop/business attached to the MOT centre.

If the tester can't see any rust or corrosion on the pipes he cannot fail them and he cannot remove the underseal either.

Regards

Chris

Re: Re MOT (Brake pipes)

Unless when you brush them you make a hole and fluid starts pissing out ;)

Brake pipes are safety critical, if they really are properly corroded then do get them changed.

Re: Re MOT (Brake pipes)

You sound like you are a millionaire Tom. Do you own an MOT station/workshop ?!!

Replacement pipes could be as much as £400 or even more.

Of course the brakes are "safety critical" it's not a safety issue though, It's a about MOT- Garages taking the ****: NOT about "fluid pissing out of pipes" Tom.

Re: Re MOT (Brake pipes)

The pipes are about £50-100, its just all the stuff in the way that costs money to remove and put back.

I don't own an MOT station or garage, but I do like to know that when I stamp on the middle pedal it will do what I expect.

Doing something so that an MOTer won't fail your car cos he thinks he can stiff you and make some quick cash is a good thing. (Don't forget you are allowed to appeal MOT failures and have it checked by an independant inspector)

However hiding something that is a legit MOT failure and could actually be dangerous to you and/or others is not a good thing.

Pipes

Tom

you have missed the point completely or you are just overtired and are starting to fret. Go to bed mate, things will not seem half as bad in the morning.

Re: Pipes

Err... no. You are the one saying to hide something from an MOTer.

Yes MOTers may fail something that in actuality should pass just to make a few extra £££ but the MOT is supposed to be there as a test to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy, not as a means for garages to make cash.

But if you are happy to drive a car with potential brake problems.... so be it. :)

Just hope next time you go on a bus/train/plane the last person to check it did a proper job ;)

Re: Pipes

guys, no need to argue. thanks for the help. were all mates on this site and i value both your opinins, so cheers.

some mot guys do take the **** but i dont know enough to challenge their points and at the same time i want to drive a safe car....

so fingers crossed.
