steps for fixing steering rack,

1, remove engine
2, fix steering rack
3, replace engine

cant be that bad right? i have not had to use my panda Porter or Haynes manual yet.
i am not counting torque settings though.

Haynes tends to say things like "remove the alternator" - it doesn't cater for people who don't know what it looks like & can't find it in the engine bay! Half my issues are identifying where/what things are - you need pictures designed for a 5 year old & a description that your average idiot can follow!

I'm very impressed that you can dismantle everything John (and put it back together), but there are more of us Clarkson like mechanics about (shout & hit it with a hammer). (y)

I can confirm that the instructions for removing the starter motor are "remove the starter motor" with no indication of where it even is

I find Haynes specialises in starting a procedure by saying something like "remove such and such as shown in section 4.13" ...which always shows you a 903 in a mk1!

I'm so glad it's not only me.

I know I have very little mechanical ability, but even so I can't always (ever?) deal with the more complicated Haynes instructions.

I think you're right Cameron - the starter motor was one that got me following the Haynes manual. I can also confirm that the instruction for a 127 starter motor is "remove the starter motor", and that all the relevant pictures are for the 903cc OHV, and not my 1049cc OHC versions - which are completely and comprehensively different! :bang:
