Piston rings

Hi there,

Can somebody tell me what the symptoms are of piston rings going? As i have been told mine could be damaged, as my punto 1.2 16v is misfiring on 2 cylinders, coil changed, ht leads and spark plugs changed, everything was pointing towards ecu fault but also changed ecu and it still misfiring on cylinders 2 and 3, I do not know what it can be i hope somebody can tell me what is wrong with my punto as it has been sat on my drive for 2 months now! and i wanna drive it! lol, my cam belt did snap about 4 months ago damaging 8 valves, they have all been sorted now and it was working for about two weeks and then it starts misfiring.

I hope somebody can help me and point me in direction.
If it does look like piston rings can you buy after market pistons for the 1.2 16v?

hello fella, 1st off sounds like your headgasket has gone as missfiring on the middle cylinders (cylinder head bends in middle)

1. check compression
2. is it white or blue smoke?? white being coolant, blue bein oil
3. if its your rings, will smoke heavily on hard accelleration.

Thanks for the ONE person that replyed... finally found problem out now head gasket had split in middle of cylinders 2 and 3... only been on for 50 miles before it broke :S

was the cylinder head (and sometimes required the block) skimmed (i.e. machined to flat and no imperfections/uneveness/distortions) before the replacement head gasket was installed?

If not then this can readily lead to the blowing of new head gaskets.

Apparently it didnt need doing lol... but i starting to think it did! its getting skimmed tommorrow before the new gasket goes on... hopefully it will last longer and wont break down for a while! so i can enjoy driving it!
