Anyone know why there is a phantom drain plug on the top shift UT box? :(

When I removed the MK2’s gearbox, I removed what I thought was the drain plug – the one with a 12mm alan key head. But the little bugger didn’t shift!! So I ended up stuffing it up big time, but got the oil out.

I recently noticed that the bottom shift box has a nice 19mm bolt head style drain plug, and then spotted that the top shift boxes do too

So I have been lucky enough to get the ‘other’ Alan key head plug out in one bit from my second top shift box.

This plug is an M18 X 1.5 odd ball!! thread that I can’t find anywhere.

Any way, anyone know what the stupid second plugged hole is for?

Now I have the hole plugged, I hope I have a good box and can get on with it :)

Nah the filler plug is further up - higher than the diff :)

I think we really need a photo - of the 'phantom drain plug' (what have I started with my phantom electricity... ;))

The real drain plug will be at the bottom of the diff housing (but you know that), so I'm trying to understand which other plug could be a drain - maybe it was one below the reverse light switch?
