Technical Part numbers?

i quite often need to find part numbers to have confidence when ordering. Is there a way of finding these online? I guess taking the faulty part out an seeing if there is a number on it is one way but it's not always easy, I have the eLearn workshop manual, which is quite useful but no part numbers! Occasionally suppliers are helpful but not always,

Any suggestions or experience?
