Thanks,the dealer has the car going now,it was the clutch switch(in a way).
The switch itself was working correctly,so the fault diagnoses was difficult,but the switch bracket,which is "welded" to the clutch pedal,was broken off.
It would appear from the dealers description that instead of being welded correctly,there was only a single dot of weld which had come away,he believes it had been like this from new.
Which is possible because we've owned the car from new.
Apparently this "fault" was also stopping the stop/start function operation & also causing engine misfire,rough running.
Because since he welded the bracket correctly,the car is now running great & the stop/start working with no other work carried out

Sadly it hasn't magically fixed the dodgy aircon.
Thought this might be good info for other members,or maybe this is a well known problem.
anyway no harm in posting the findings.
