Hi all, I am going to buy a Panda 4x4, I'm going to look at one advertised as reg 03/2007 Climbing ELD, does this mean that 4x4 is only selected manually or do they all have viscous coupling and ELD is only used if required?. I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks

I cannot comment on vehicles built for the Greek market but no Climbing models in the UK had ELD. The only model with ELD in the UK was the Cross.
However, I believe that all Mark 3 Panda 4x4s have a viscous coupling without the ability to select 4WD manually. The ELD is selected manually by means of a button on the dashboard.

Very late Petrol 4wd UK Pandas had the ELD didn't they

They did - from about 2009/10 I think. They dropped the viscous coupling in the nose of the rear diff and replaced it with an electromagnetic wotsit instead. I thought the reason was for ESP reasons - you can't control wheels and brakes without total control over drive and stuff like that.

It is and it would, but the car needs control over all drive routes to be able to react as the ESP or Traction Control require. A passive viscous coupling will do what it does naturally and might fit the electronics. Viscous Diffs have all but disappeared now, sacrificed in the name of market 'demand' for more and more safety systems to protect the vulnerable. Shame, because viscous Diffs rarely ever go wrong, where as.....

Turning on ELD on a 2007 4x4 will not 'manually select' 4x4 (the viscous coupling will do that). But it will prevent a rear wheel spinning, for example in a situation where one rear wheel is off the ground, if the system thinks it needs to. ELD was an option on 4x4s with a viscous coupling, but not those in the UK for some reason. (I know that it was available in France and The Netherlands, as it was listed in the 'options list' shown on the French and Dutch websites, and I guess in other counties too)
