I've recently got hold of a Panda 4x4 for spares, so was hoping to do something with the camshaft... I know it gives 5ish more bhp on a 999cc engine, will it do similar with the 1108, or is it not worth changing (its only about 15 mins to take out) ?

Not sure, but I reckon it will liberate more power from the 1108 engine. I would have thought that the standard 999cc and 1108cc engines would have used the same camshafts, but I could be wrong. As you said, it's a quick swap over so try it and see, and please post the results!

The best camshaft to used is the Punto 75SX camshaft, but you'll need to plumb in an electric fuel pump if used on a carburetor engine as the camshaft doesn't have the lobe to drive the mechanical fuel pump. On SPI engines this shouldn't be a problem!

I'm pretty sure the 999cc and 1108cc use different cam shafts. Thats the way we think the increase by 10% in engine size gives a 30% increase in power.

the 1108 has a longer stroke so the cam shaft will probs hold the valves open for longer to alow more air in also a biger bore

all i fink will happen is you might get more power at higher rpm but less tourqe
at low rpm

1108
70.00mm 72.00mm
2.76 in 2.83 in

999
70.00mm 64.90mm
2.76 in 2.56 in

so realy its just gains and losses

Bang on mate!

Youll lose the ablilty to fill the cylinder in a low rev-range

if you want some real fun a good swap for a 1303cc strada derived uno is the 1500 strada cam shaft advanced 9 degrese or their abouts and timed to mach
rev it to 8500 fit a biger eahaust and fiat croma carb and richen it up then you got about 100 bhp

yep, the 4x4 panda has slightly less torque at low revs, so i'd expect the same on the 1108, with lower gas speeds etc... But I'll probably try it for a laugh one weekend and see what happens (when I've got some free time, probably a couple of months yet!). Its not too much bother to change it back if its rubbish.

Sorry to hijack your thread totnesmonster (by the way, I changed the cam in my Uno 60 (1116cc, 58bhp) once, I put in the cam from my FIAT 128 1290cc Coupe, all clearances were the same but there was a lovely roar from the engine and definitely an extra 5bhp or maybe more ;) The 128 Coupe 1116 had 65bhp claimed for it and that had the same camshaft but lower compression. However I found my Uno used more fuel and there was a bit less torque (swings and roundabouts) so I eventually put the original cam back in. But - and here's the rub - when I fitted twin carbs to my 128, it had MORE torque and the same or better economy, so if I'd put better carburetion on the Uno I reckon I could have reaped great rewards...)

...but anyway, how fortunate that my friend James (jjhepburn further up in this thread) has just fitted a 1498cc engine into his Uno (originally a 45), the engine being from an X1/9 but previously installed in an Uno so came with an Uno 70 gearbox of the bottom-change type (like an early Turbo but with Tripode driveshafts). An Uno 70 has provided a number of useful parts - just the exhaust remains to be made now. We changed the cambelt and noticed the timing had been one tooth off. Is that likely to have been 'correct'? Or do we need a vernier pulley to get the 9 degrees?

I'm not sure if my timing light goes up to 'mach', or indeed whether timing is usually set to the speed-of-sound :D

We definitely need a bigger carb as it has a poxy Uno 1301cc carb (Weber DMTE 30/32) at the moment. Those things are bad enough in an Uno 70 without expecting more power out of them... I tried connecting the accelerator pump electrical-doodad last night and couldn't for the life of me see what effect it was having - I operated the throttle and fuel pumped out whether it was 'on' or 'off'.

I was wondering about a Lancia Beta carb (the older parts are easier for us to get than the newer parts, not many dead Cromas around as the blasted things don't rust as well as the older FIATs...)

no they certainly dont my dad had a 1.8 croma what a lovely torquey engine that was lamperdy twin cam i believe if thats how you spell it

not sure about the beta carb mabey alot of lancia bits are similar
and will fit the strada manifold

i'm not sure about the timing i was only 8 at the time howether we were using a paint mark on the flyweel i dont know who worked out were to put the paint mark or how much further round

i asume it was set diferently than normal to acount for the higher revs we were using mabey to spark a little sooner to give the mixture more time to burn

i fink the 1500 strada already has a full vernier cam shaft
