Good morning all.

Does anyone know if fiat made a 4x4 auto. It would be good to try and get one.

Hello.

I've never seen one either just wondered.

The selecta box isn't that strong so maybe not maybe not a good idea with a 4x4.

I'd prefer to keep them standard so probably wouldn't alter it.

Thanks for your help.

I'll have a look for a standard one.

Yes I'm not aware of a 4x4 auto Panda either. There may have been on the continent, but I'd have thought we'd have stumbled across it.

This one's for sale if you're looking for one:

Not mine, but belongs to VmanC Low mileage, rare original first series Sisley, and drives well - I've been borrowing it for a while (y)

And the other thing to factor in would be how would the offroad capabilites be affected by it being an automatic? The reason I like manual is because I feel like I can have more control over the car, switch to lower or higher gears where needed rather than the automatic box deciding that. Factor in that when you are offroading you will need this control even more, I would think that putting an automatic box in a panda 4 x 4 would not be a good idea in terms of offroading.

But I could of course be completely wrong given my lack of experience with automatic cars, and that I dont have a 4 x 4 panda, I me be making assumptions that are completely wrong.

My Isuzu was an auto: normally just driving the rear wheels... -- but with a low-ratio and high-ratio 4x4 gearbox. Best 4x4 I've ever driven. Would go anywhere....

Does a Selecta have ratios?

I'm not actually being silly - if it's continuously variable are there ratios still? It has normal drive and low (which makes more noise for no apparent reason/result in the Uno).

I dont know

I should never have waded in on this topic should I  :ROFLMAO:

I wouldn't worry, I have no idea either...... :)

Not so bad then :) I just wanted to air my concerns about the idea of it, though I do think that someone should attempt it, just to see! After all innovation would never happen if noone tried to do anything that noone has done before. A year from now maybe everyone will be doing it :)

I don't think they really have ratios -- unlike the CVT gearbox in the Punto: which has 'pretend' ones, as it's a semi-automatic. But there must be a range from low gearing to high, I suppose....

In the Isuzu, you could select L, 1, 2, 3. The L in the Panda Selecta just makes it rev like crazy (like the Uno), though....

The manual gearbox on the 4x4 is pretty much the same as the 2wd until you get to the diff, on the 4x4 it has two crownwheel and pinions, one to drive the front wheels and one to drive the rears. If this diff could be fitted to the cvt gearbox you would have yourself a 4x4 auto. The problem is that the cvt gearbox casing is not designed to do this so you would have to make at the very least a new casing, not something you could knock up in your shed over a weekend.

I'm not convinced the end result would make a great offroader, but it would probably drive through snow better than a 2wd Selecta.

Automatics in general are generally said to be better off road, mainly because you have two pedals - less to think about when you are half way up a 45 degree hill or about to tip over on cross-camber. But I have driven both formats quite alot and I am happy with the manual :)

Yep....I like manuals too, but your right, autos are better off road for many reasons.
