Ok my mother just bought this to connect her laptop plus my Dads pc.
She has kindly voted me to put it in for her since she has no idea about computers.
Is there anything i should know about these before i even start. I hav'nt even looked at the box or anything yet just thought i would find out what it entails before i start.

Cheers in advance

i have recently set up a wireless network in my uni house, we have telewest broadband, we bought a wireless router with built in modem- which was a mistake as telewest hardwire in a modem, where as my BT connection at home, They didnt so we had to but a Belkin 54g router/modem.So its best to sort out a your ISP first (If you havnt already)then see what extras you need.
The Belkin one is complete crap(has to be reset all the time at my uni house we have a netgear router and it is brilliant, I would recomend netgear stuff!

A pile of crap from what i can gather lol. Still not in properly.
Ive got it connected but it wont function with the internet.

It would really help to know what you have. What make and model ? What Spec ? Without this, it's difficult to give you the right advice :)

The more info you can give the better;
ISP - is it ADSL or cable ?
Router - make/model etc.

Without this the best advice is to keep things as simple as possible and then build on it.
1) Just connect the router to the line, if it's ADSL (over the BT phone line) are you getting the "Line" light on the router to indicate connection- see the router's manual for info on what light etc.
2) Next connect a PC to the router (with a network lead if you can) and get it connected to the internet - again see the router manual.
3) Next add wireless into the equation- start with the default settings to get connection and then;
- change the network name from the default "belkin54g" or whatever to something you will recognise.
- set a new password
- set the authentication (WPA gives a good stable connection and can use a memorable pasword)
- turn off "broadcast SSID"
This is a bit vague but how to do it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

HTH ;)

Just make sure you enable internet connection aharing ;)

My mate couldnt get his working for over a week, went up and sorted in
