I've managed to break off my chain guard on my mountain bike into little pieces now i'm having difficulty finding another one. By chain guard i mean the ring of plastic that stops your trousers getting caught in the sprocket and chain.

Does anyone know where i can find cheap ones. I have shimano acera X running gear if thats any help.

I have found chainring guards and bash guards on ebay no idea what they are or what they mean, some go inbetween the sprockets at the front etc. Plus they are approx £25. WTF. I only wanna pay say £5. Even thats expensive for a piece of plastic.

Does anyone know what the exact name is, i've tried googling chain guards, chainring guards, bash guards etc and all show performance type guards etck, cheapest is approx £20. I could buy a new bike for £79. Any help appreciated.

One last thing which cycle carriers fit on the Bravo, the ones that clip to the boot? Anyone with any recommendations?

im not sure on the exact name im afraid but your best bet would be a good bike shop that does trials kits. the bash guards you have seen on ebay are the small metal rings, normally with teeth on that the trials boys use to stop them smashing the cranck cogs to pieces.

if you go to one of the bike shops they should have em floating about and you should pay no more than a fiver, may even get it for free

The only bike shop i can think of is Halfords. I was thinking of someplace cheap on the internet, but looks like i'll visit halfords again.

they are the only one

i can see if i have one in the shed i guess, i may do, bgot a few bits left over from my x country and free ride days

i know halfords do do the trials work so should have something available, and they wont charge you much at all, a few quid in the pocket of the bike hut boy and your sorted

Cheers Andy, i'll try the shops unless you do find something. If anyone also knows of where to buy online that would be good for future reference. As this prob wont be my last time.

I use www.chainreactioncycles.com a hell of a lot for my bike bits...

Very pleasant staff, so they might be able to help.... cheap prices too..

or do as i did on my trials bike and bmx just your pants in your socks you look a chav but oh well, saves money! and i think i may have one in my shed ill look later.

i paid about £10 or £15 for one from a local cycle shop. McHellfrauds had them too for a similar price, but i went with the wee cycle shop as the guy said if i went down on my bike he'd fit it. took him almost a minute to do it iirc :D

the one i have is from my bmx i took it off when i did it up so i didnt wana spoil the look of it . if u cover the postage costs u can have it. if its the same one? straight bit with a curve over it that sits above the chain n front gear?

Paul,

if you measure it and tell Joske how many mounting points it has then he can see if it will fit on his top crank gear, iirc from my bmxing days the crank is a bit smaller than a good mtb large crank ring

not the right part paul Joske is after a plastic bash ring to sit ontop of the big crank cog mate

oh kk. i have one of those aswell its black metal off a mountain bike but its pretty batterd!

MTB bits

Joske-

I'm actually more of a cyclist than petrolhead. You'll probably find that the 'chainguard' on your cranksets big ring is unique to that particular chainset (the chainset is the crank arm/chainrings assembly).

If the chainset is Acera X it will have the brand on it. And Chain Reaction cycles is a good place to start as mentioned above, but failing that any Shimano stocking bike shop should be able to get the bit from Shimano distributors Madison (see http://www.hyoung.co.uk/madison.html). But try to use a shop that does better quality bikes i.e. steer clear of Halfords if you want service!

If you are really stuck try an advert on

http://www.singletrackworld.com/

or

http://www.cyclingplus.co.uk/

Like most things you can source it if you really want it. I even have a few old chainring guards here, so if you can be bothered measure the bolt (screw?!) circle diameter and tell me the number of retaining screws and I'll look in my parts box.

Bashrings...

P.S.

The trials style bash rings mentioned above typically fit on higher end chainsets, often in the place of the big ring. You won't get one on an Acera level chainset unless it has individually replaceable rings, which I'm pretty sure it doesn't have. You'd be depriving yourself of you fastest gears in that case anyhow.
