Ok so i was trying to find where my tailgate rattle was coming from and have removed something i shouldn't have. at the very back of the car inside the boot there is a black plastic what looks like air vent thing with grid like gaps in it(behind the piece of carpet that sticks up that you use to pull the boot floor carpet up with). When i pushed my finger through the gap i could feel something behind it flapping so i thought this could be the source of the noise. I put my hand up under the car from the outside to feel it from behind and felt a bit of what i thought was loose plastic so i pulled it and these flaps that were behind the said black vent thingy came off! Now I'm worried i've done something bad and that they are there for an important reason, does anyone know what purpose they serve? I dont think they are for sound deadening as surely they would just not be there rather than cut a piece of the car out just to fit this grid thing in if it serves no purpose??

Needless to say this wasnt the cause of the rattle, neither is it the tools in the spare wheel as i've had them out!

This is an air vent to help with the re-circulation of air in the car. Although it would appear to be pretty ineffectual based on its position I think that the flow of air travelling beneath the car creates a pressure difference much like a diffuser or indeed an aeroplane wing in reverse and this vacuum effect helps to suck air from the car interior aiding the introduction of fresh air into the cabin via the front vents.

The flap is just there to "seal" the hole when the car is stationary, I imagine to prevent African killer bees from getting into the boot and making a nest or similar.
