the problem is i have never done this before and am in need of a little help on what i need and what i have to do - i have the card and buying a router tomorrow so help please guys

Ahh sorry Sammi i forgot I promised you should have asked!

Sammi, tell us what you have already first, any network? What type of BB model do you have and does it have a LAN connection or just USB?

ok its DSL i think thats the right term with bt, i have no network of anykind as it BB just runs to my dads laptop, ideally i want to get mine going - to fussed about my ads laptop being wireless just mine for now and perhaps my brothers.

OK, a few questions:

Do you want everything to be wireless or do you want cabled connections possible too?
Your ADSL model, does it just have a USB port or does it also have a LAN port (a LAN port is a RJ45 plug basically, erm, look on your laptop, it will have a LAN port, is there a similar thing on the ADSL modem or just USB?)

Do you have any desktops or just laptops?

Sadly David yes :( BUT there are benefits to having everything wireless.....In our house we have used (before I broke it) a normal router (cabled) but also a wireless access point plugged into it to give wireless too. You can get a router and access point built into one also - cabled network and wireless in one unit. Remember you don't need to buy and add cabling to your house with what you have plus you don't need to worry with moving it about etc.

Although there are more options than I will give I will give IMO the cheapest and easiest ok?

OK, if it has a LAN port you have one main choice: (there's a second but i'm not 100% sure so don't want to say)
You need a wireless router: Something like: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3706&item=5738902394&rd=1

CHeap ones start at £40 or so and rise to £100 plus. If you only intend to use within your house, almost all will have a strong enough signal, cheap or not. Good makes include D-link and Linksys (although I am a Linksys fan I had a problem with one before although we use them fine at home)

If you don't have a LAN port on your modem you need to replace this modem as it can't be easily networked: (I know it can before anybody corrects me)

Then you would be needing something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3692&item=6731160371&rd=1

This has a built in modem and both the above allow cabelled connections. They just give you an idea hopefully of what you are looking for.

Speed is another issue, there are two major standards, b and g. b is 11mbps, g is 56mbps, your internet is around 0.5mbps, i.e. whichever you get it doesn't matter if you only use it for surfing the net. However, as most stuff is g these days and it's backwards compatible, go for the faster g.

You may also need to buy a PCMCIA wifi card (make sure it's b/g compatible as the rest of your system will be) for any laptop without a wireless card. Yours already has one.

Any more questions before I go to bed? (have to go to Harrogate tomorrow)

This post contains eBay links which may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.
In my house i am running this pc ( wired) and two other wireless. We use a router (asked the guys a pc world which one is the best for us) and he recommended a 'Linksys' router. The laptop you have has 'intergrated wireless LAN (802.11g)' So you only need to buy the router. ( i THINK there are two types - 'g' and another letter, so you gotta get the one which works with this)... paul will set me straight, but i think thats about it.

It's surprisingly easy Sammi - we will have to talk about passwording it (either WEP or WPA) tomorrow though, that's important.

I don't have wireless anymore as I duffed up (technical term) my wireless access point. - We already have a seperate router on its on and have done for years so to make it wireless instead of buying the integrated items I have shown you, I bought a wireless access point which can turn a normal router into a wireless router :) I am actually looking at getting a cheap new one at the moment.

I am only a txt away tomorrow (can't take calls though) if you need advice.

Oh if you have a LAN socket you want this really:

If not, you want something like this:

Dave may confuse you with a further type of comms called "super-G" -Sadly I haven't learnt much about this yet so can't comment. I know it's theoretically double the speed of g (bit pointless though tbh) but I am not sure if it achieves that or if it is some form of cheat.

mmm, can't really join in on this one as my Lan setup skills are limited to say the least. I was only on the IT section for 2 years and don't really know jack sh*t about PC's  Was an "A" grade blagger, tho. :D

paul u n00b.. :p
D-Link arne't that great... Belkin is very user friendly and i've set one up in less than 5 mins. Me also considers the likes of 3Com, NetGear and Cisco :)

Do make your wireless secure... so no freeloaders can leech your bandwidth. There's a guy near me unsecured so anyone can use his internet access.

"super-G" isn't pointless... 11g standard is 54mbps... doubling to 108 with the super-g technology by Netgear. Other brands have got it too. D-Link is airplus
effectively, its almost like having LAN cable speeds...

goto your router settings normally 10.0.0.2 but it can be different...
just enable WEP or something with your own password...

Assuming you use WinXP, when you search for wireless access, it'll show up as being secure.. connect to it, and it'll ask for a password.

thats it :D
