I have been looking at changing the gearbox oil (x244 2003) and Fiat specify TUTELA TECHNYX 75w85 API GL4+
There doesn`t seem to be a local supplier I can find, only on ebay from France so quite expensive with postage added. The ebay description has it as fully synthetic.
However, there is this one Mannol FWD Getriebeoel 75W-85 API GL 4, seems to be the same spec but description has it as semi synthetic. This is from a local supplier so free postage.
So question is are they the same and if not does it matter, can I use semi synthetic ?

Hi,
Have you tried your local Fiat dealer?
I can't find a clear, verifiable answer on GL4+. some say it meets GL4 and GL5 but the Tutela does not say it meets GL5. Gear boxes can be fussy and personally I'd go for the right specification. Oil may be expensive but a gearbox repair is a lot more. Synthetic/semi-synthetic is less of an issue than the specification and a trusted brand.

...that particular lubricant is not the one Manoll recommend for the Ducato on their selector tool.

The manual for my ex-Ducato dating back to 2004 (a bit later than yours, I know) shows Tutela Matryx (GL4) as the requirement, as does the Petronas selector tool here for all post-2000 x244 diesels:

http://www.extranetpli.eu.petronas....zione.asp?id_marca=3&id_livello=1&id_lingua=2

Matryx would be cheap here:

https://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Details&ProdID=1315&sku=114126

...especially as the 3 litres you're likely to require would probably attract free delivery.

If you're not happy with the above (I can't verify the Petronas recommendation, but they make the Tutela), then Technyx, (which is GL4+) can be had from eBay, here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TUTELA-03...-OIL-75W85-FIAT-ALFA-ROMEO-1LTR-/140603428827

edited to add:

or indeed, available cheap from shop4parts like the Matryx:

https://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Details&ProdID=2401&sku=185548

(and they seem to favour the Matryx over the Technyx for the Ducato)

I used TUTELA TECHNYX 75W-85 GL4+ (part no. 0014741616).
Sourced from my local Fiat dealer with no dramas.
In my opinion it's worth getting the right stuff, its not much more expensive than risking possible problems with alternatives.
It's not as if one changes the gearbox oil every 10,000 miles.

Citroen / Peugeot / Total recommend TOTAL TRANSMISSION BV (called Gear 8 now I think) 75W-80 API GL-4+ for the Relay / Boxer with the mlgu gearbox.

You can get that in any renault, citroen or peugeot dealer. Thats what I have in mine for the last 40k no issues as there was no Fiat dealer withing a 2 hour drive.

Oil manufacturers recommend different oils for Ducato/Boxer/Relay/Jumper with the same engine/gearbox so hard to know who to believe.

Too much EP additive can cause syncros to slip though so i getting a GL-5 oil make sure its also gl-4.

Heres recommendation for Ducato MLGU
Total: TRANSMISSION DUAL 9 FE 75W-90
Shell: Spirax S4 AT 75W-90
MPM: 75W-85 GL-5 Premium Synthetic FE
Petronas: TUTELA TRANSMISSION MATRYX
Valvoline: Valvoline Gear 75w-80
Granville: EP 75W/90 Semi-Synthetic
