AS I've said before my little oyster doesn't like this cold weather and I think she wishes was july in Italy, she doesn't start first time in this weather. So I've started doing what you all suggested and turning ignition a bit, waiting til lights go out (apart from handbrake light) and then turning off and on again and she starts usually first time.

However, today when I did that, the engine oil light (a little can with a drip?) and a yellow light that looked like an engine stayed on, although they disappeared when I turned the ignition on and she started.

Is it normal that these two lights don't extinguish in the first MAR? turn of ignition? Is it okay though because they DO extinguish when the engine is actually running.

Don't tell me to look in the manual and get all shirty with me for being a silly woman ( :) )cus I know I could look in the manual but TBH being a non-car maintenance/tekkie sort of person I just know it would mean naff-all to me still .... I could ask hubbie but as it's dark when I leave in the morning and when he gets home after me it's dark it'll have to wait until saturday for him to have a look and I'm a mite concerned.

Any help? Pretty please?

EDIT : yes, before you ask, I did check the oil about 2-3 weeks ago and I've only done less than 2000 miles still in it (got it mid september).

I'm certainly no expert, but it seems to me that you shouldn't turn the key to MAR, then turn it off, then turn it on again all the way. I think the ECU might get a bit confused... But, I'm sure I'll be corrected :) What I do (and it starts every time) is to turn the key to MAR (half way) and then, when most of the lights go off (apart from the handbrake and battery I think) turn the key all the way up to start the car. No problems with egnition...

I tried that but then it won't go any further, i put at MAR and then i can't seem to turn it any more unless I turn it back and then forward again. Will ask hubbie for a lesson, and failing that i'll take a trip to the dealer and ask them to show me. thanks.

I think you must be a little heavy handed, well that's what your hubby told me.:) When turning the key to MAR you must do so slowly and gently then stop at that point before waiting for the systems to kick in. If you exceed the MAR point during the turn of the key by the slightest millimetre it will not allow you to turn it any further and you will have to return the key to the off position and start again as you have found.

Admittedly it is easy to exceed the MAR point so you do have to be extra careful when turning the key.

Heidi, just turn the key to MAR, wait till all the lights go out and then start it, you dont have to turn it off again. Dont forget, your car was built in Poland and its very cold there in winter so it should start fine in the UK:)

The oil light is oil pressure as has been said....

I have never had a 500 in bits so could be completely wrong but in some cars the Oil filter has a one way check valve to prevent filtered oil draining back from the oil gallys and into the sump however sometimes they can weep oil back after a car has been parked if the valve is damaged or has a bit of grit in it.....

(i might be wrong no doubt someone will correct me if i am)
