I have an 06 m-jet and have always changed my oil every six months. It is due for a change and i am looking for oils.

Costco currently have Mobil 1 turbo diesel 0w-40 ACEA A3/B4 for £28. Would this be suitable?

An interesting topic – the (oil) plot thickens?

I’ve the same engine & believe the OH advises Selenia WR, SAE 5W-40, FIAT 9.55535-M2(?).

From 45K-54K miles it ran on Quantum Platinum (VAG/Castrol), SAE 5W-40. At 54K miles it was changed to Selenia WR (given the belts/WP were changed at a FIAT/indie).

Now – I believe the OH for the Vectra-Charlie or Signum (with the same engine) advise SAE 5W-30.

What do GP later issue OH give as oil spec for the Mjet?

My previous reply was based on the post before mine!

Just checked a 2007 Grande Punto manual and it has FIAT 9.55535-N2 5W40 (Selenia WR 5W40 being the oem).

So you actually need 5W40 ACEA A3/B4-04.

The 1st ed 07/2010 OH (& Linea 1sted 12/2010) submits …
9.55535-S1, Selenia WR PE, SAE 5W-30

The 2nd ed 07/2009 Croma OH submits …
9.55535-N2, Selenia WR, SAE 5W-40 or …
9.55535-S1, Selenia WR PE, SAE 5W-30.

The 1st ed 06/2010 Alfa 159 OH submits …
9.55535-S1, Selenia WR PE, SAE 5W-30.

To muddy the issue further – the 3rd ed 04/2010 Alfa Brera OH submits …
9.55535-N2, Selenia WR, SAE 5W-40 (for the 2.4) & …
9.55535-S1, Selenia WR PE, SAE 5W-30 (for the 2.0)

I wouldn’t necessarily reject the Mobil 1 before taking a harder look at it.

.

The last Grande Punto manual with the 1.9MJet was July 2007 with the FIAT 9.55535-N2 5W40 reference.

Thanks for that DC – I wasn’t aware of the demise of the GP 1.9

But remain confused over the intra (between FIAT group badges) & inter (between manufacturer, e.g. FIAT v Saab) oil spec variations – given the engine is the same. For example, the “recommended” oil for a FIAT 1.9 may well be listed as SAE 5W-40 (9.55535-N2) – but for a Vectra-Charlie (or Saab 9-3) with that same engine, I believe (?) the spec is SAE 5W-30.

The S spec superseeded the N spec and offers greater protection...simples.

FIAT/Alfa Manuals said:
"Oils for diesel engines - Synthetic-based oils, grade SAE 5W-30
FIAT 9.55535-S1 qualification.
For diesel engines, in emergency cases where genuine products are not available, lubricants with min. performance ACEA C2 are
accepted. If this is the case, the best engine performance is guaranteed. We however recommend replacing the lubricant with those
recommended by Fiat Dealership.
The use of products with inferior characteristics compared to ACEA C2 could cause damage, not covered by the
guarantee, to the engine."

Arnold Clark used Texaco 10W40 at my last service (receipt to prove). Don't you just love Uncle Arnie.
No Uncle Arnie apologists please!

Are you sure - mjet needs minerals that are not in standard oils

I think Fiat are somewhat guilty of quoting obtuse oil specs' in their car manuals in attempt to drive sales of their bought in and rebranded oil across their dealer network. AFAIK, Fiat don't manipulate and then blend high quality longlife sythetic oils from crude? But Castrol do. Castrol also test their products extensively on all manor of platforms. I even use it in my bike. 10w/40 motorcycle oil that is though. Lovely stuff also. (y)

Fiat used to own Selenia until they sold it off hence the recommendation. Selenia use Fiat engines to test their oils so should be more suited to the engines than other brands. Using a different brand wont destroy it though.

Selenia have a comercial arrangement with Alfa/Fiat/Lancia.
ALL car manufacturers have similar arangements with their chosen oil company: Ferrari = Shell, BMW = Castrol, etc., etc..

As for the oil spec for the OP, it is very simple: 5W40 ACEA A3/B4-04.
No shortage of those around.
