I am currently looking at fitting an oil cooler to my normally aspirated race uno, which has the strada/x1/9 1500cc sohc fitted. I intend to use one from the uno turbo mk 1, along with the sandwich plate/pipes etc again, all from a mk 1 uno turbo. As I am not a mechanic, I am unsure whether there will be any problems using this. I am assuming it will phiscally fit/connect up as the engine blocks are almost the same (bar longer stroke on my engine) Can anyone advise on anything I need to do ( I have heard that the cooler should be at least level with sump etc?) Any help/advice would be appreciated!

Good idea for a race engine and I think you're going about it the right way by using the sandwich plate from the Mk1 turbo. The oil filter is in the same place as the 1500, although the filter element is slightly smaller (as a result of newer technology).

As custard says, you should have a thermostat fitted if the race car is ever used for street use, and the sandwich plate from the Turbo has this built-in so that's taken care of. And yes, you just bolt the cooler radiator onto the bottom crossmember with the brackets that it uses on the Turbo. You'll need to add a couple of thread inserts in the bodyshell metal, or alternatively reposition and use some large self-tapping screws.

The Turbo also has a steel bar under the front (I've removed it, to save weight!) which protects the oil cooler and charge cooler (intercooler) from grounding. The brackets for this attach to the bumper mountings. You may like to get all these parts at the same time...

custard - who used to be 'custard boy' but has now presumably grown up to be 'custard man' - is that post count for real?! And you speak Japanese?

Thanks for that Alex, I wasn't sure whether the uno turbo had the thermostat as standard built into the sandwich plate, so that is good news! I have now decided to go for a new cooler, and may possibly look at a 13 or 16 row. This car will not be used for road use. It would shake my teeth out within 60 yards! Am I right in thinking the fitments on sandwich plate are BSP fitting 1/2 or 2/4 fitting? Doin' my best to keep this engine reiable and in one piec as I have spent a fortune on having it built!!
