Fiamma awning advice please?

Hi, I have a Fiamma F45 IL on my van, the 5.5m version. It needs either a new ratchet/clutch on the main roller tube, or a new gearbox. I have all the parts already, but as the thing is very large, and a gravity magnet, it is thus heavy.

I have nowhere to attempt the repair except on the street, so fully deploying the awning is likely to cause at least adverse comment. Then if I can not retract it, the vehicle is immobile!

Cut to the chase- is it possible to change the ratchet clutch without fully deploying it? By removing the plastic end cap, then the metal inner cap that holds the gearbox/winch, then pulling the ratchet body from the roller tube? Are they secured into this tube somehow or just a push fit? If so, how tight are they pressed in?

The problems as I see them, are 1/ preventing the awning deploying more than enough to just get at the parts in question, 2/ what is to stop (if anything!) the main tube pulling out of the bearing at the none winch end when trying to remove the ratchet?

As I understand it, the opening force for the awning is solely provided by the tension of internal springs in the awning supports, pulling the fabric out when 'permitted' by correct operation of the winch acting correctly on the clutch- freewheeling out, in effect. Winding in and the ratchet engages in the opposite rotation to allow drive to the roller to wind in against tension in the support springs.

Have I got it right? Have you done one of these component replacements? I have seen the Fiamma videos, which TBH aren't much help. They have a demo awning placed at a nice working height, all new, and always the smallest one; and no issues having a pavement over which the awning may pass!

I hope I've given a clear description!

Any help much welcome, and you may see this post on other groups/fora and likely sources of info/ Cheers everyone!

Hi Ocwobio, If I were in your position, I would open the awning a couple of inches so that it clears it's housing. Then remove the winding end and have a look. Everything should become apparent. Common sense should dictate that Fiamma would design the awning to be serviced in the closed position or one would hope so. I have the earlier version of that awning. On mine, the supporting legs that come out as you wind the awning out don't appear to be sprung as the fabric has to be tensioned using an extra bar. All the Best, Ian
