Hi all

Just wondering about NOS and where you stand legally. My mate tells me its illegal to have NOS turned on or to use on a public road. I was thinking if this is the case to have a fake switch in the boot then when plod asks how do you turn it on say is in the boot, cos ur hardly gonna jump out at the lights to race nova boy then jump in again. Mind you would be quite unlucky to get pulled over then they look in your boot unless you burn them off. Also how much more would it cost to insure it? Thinking of fitting to my 1.8 eventually when I have some money. (maybe never!)

Thanks

If its illegal for use on the road, then surely its uninsurable?

insurance

Bit of a tricky one this. What kind of increase are you looking at? 25-30bhp? If it is then I can't see a reason why it can't be insured. What niggles me is the increase in potential fire/expolsion. I don't think that NOS is expolsive but any compressed gas canister isn't going to make your car safer to drive. I can't see insurance companies falling over themselves to insure. If it's not declared, then like any modification, it will probably invlidate your cover in the event of a claim.

Let me guess Jon. Your mate dosen't have Nitrous in his car dose he? Infact I bet he dosent even know any one who uses nitrous!

OK the law. No its not ilegal to have it in your car and drive round with it and yes you can legaly drive around with the system armed.

Nitorus is'nt an explosive gas and poses little to no threat having it in your car so there is no reason for the police to pull you up on it. And to put another nitrous myth to bed while I'm one one! No you do not have to put a sticker on the back of your car with some sort of chemical/explosive warning on it

As for insurance It will put your premium through the roof. Probably more so than having a turbo fitted to your car. My kit is insured for track and show use only and that cost me a fair bit too.

Re: FAO: JonD

I had a feeling it's illegal to use NOS on the road because you've not paid excise fuel duty on it? Is this true?

Re: Re: FAO: JonD

Nitrous ain't a fuel, its an oxidising agent. :)

You've still got to add good ol' petrol to the mix to get anywhere fast.

Re: Re: FAO: JonD

no

Read the above again.

Using Nitrous on the road is in no way illegal.

diesels with NOS??!!

Well I'll be. Apparently, you can add NOS to a diesel. How amusing:

This is seriously tempting. a NOS injected diesel people carrier? Who'd see that coming? It's already got discs all round, and 195/50 16 tyres, so I'm sure it could cope.

I might have to start saving on the sly...

Re: diesels with NOS??!!

Right then thats good to know its not illegal then. My mate hasnt got nos or doesnt know anyone who has.
(He thinks he knows everything about cars he has a cavalier and is buying a vectra next. nuff said)

So really you dont need to declare it on the insurance. But can just can imagine if you write it off and insurance company say u have nos u didn't tell us and not paying up. Mind you they could prove that you were using it.

FAO RobD. Were did you get the NOS kit from? What bhp can you take it to safely with controller? im hoping 100bhp or something like that. I know a place near me that can fill the bottles up really cheap too. Just gotta find £700 quid now!
