I'm sure some of you have seen my thread about selling the GP and buying a fiesta ST: https://www.fiatforum.com/non-fiat/161195-gp-sale-st-way-thoughts.html?p=1711495

But lets say Hypothetically I didn't buy an ST, I'd get something else.

So, I want to spend 7k max on a car, nothing over group 13 insurance as a benchmark, I want to be getting 38-40mpg on a long run at least and performance wise its got to be sunstantially quicker than a standard GP sporting.

So not too pickey then? :nerner:. Quite hard fitting those criteria tbh well picking petrol's anyway.

Clio 182, Fiesta ST, Older Civic Type-R (but as you said insurance a little high), Alfa of some sort but finding one faster than GP would need to be a 2.0TS or V6.

the ST is quicker, and its insurance group 13, but you're kidding yourself if you think you'll get 38mpg. that only happens on paper at a constant 60mph on a motorway. in reality 30mpg is what you'll be getting if you drive like i know you will. i know a girl who didnt even average 33mpg and she drives like, ermm a girl actually.


there are plenty of other options in the warm small-hatch sector. swift sport, clio 138, 207 GT, even the GPS, but they all make me yawn tbh. i hate to admit it but the best of the bunch is also the ugliest and girliest, its the mini. if you take a few test drives you'll probably agree the mini is the better car, but i dont know if you could handle the mini's funky gaylord image- i know i couldn't personally.

I drive like a grandad to work on the dual carrigeway to save fuel. Any WRC driving will be done at my own expense out of hours.

I couldn't drive a mini, I don't have the haircut nor own enough pink T-shirts to drive one of those. It would have to be a cooper s aswell, which I probably couldn't afford.

None of the warm hatches are really appealing to me. Tbh theres not a great amout that really catches my eye these days, but i'm bored of the GP, I've had it for a year now which is usually how long I can keep a car before getting bored of it.
 
I would say Clio 182. But then again....I can't think of another car that falls in the criteria you want.

Surely something quicker than your GP in Petrol isn't going to give you more than 30mpg?

clio 182 is alot to insure.

I'm talking about a long run, staying at 60. The ST will do it for sure.
I know people who drive them like they are on a rally stage and they get 33mpg

excellent you've passed the test. now you deserve to graduate to the next sector. go to a car supermarket and play with the bigger boy cars like an astra or focus or golf or a3 or leon. the difference between this sector and the one below is huge.

astra GSI was what I really wanted, but insurance and tax was just too much. An astra 888 would be cool aswell.

Focus is a good idea, but it would have to be an RS which is a no go, an ST170 is an idea, but they don't appeal to me enough. I might look into them further though.

Golf is an option, the 1.8 20v T has always appealed to me. A friend of mine is selling one aswell...

Forgot about this thread. Na 182's aren't alot.

My mate, 20 year old. 2 years NCB.....his new 182 is a couple £100 cheaper to insure that his 1.25 Fiesta. He did have alloys and lowered on the insurance like.
