He isnt hugley against it but needs a push. 1st post so hello everyone :)

He wants to know the average lifespan of stuff like gearbox, we have a zafira atm and I want a boot but still need 6 seats. However dont really need a new car so dont want to spend much and we have seen a W reg Multipla with 96,000 miles on it might do very nicely. He is concerned that it might need everything replacing when it hits 100,000 miles and its a bit older than our current car and done a few more miles. I also dont want to get the blame when it drops to bits! So if you could let me know when yours started to need major repairs I would be really grateful, also if anyone knows how much it is to replace the bits that likely need replacing that would also help.

TIA

My original uglybug started falling apart at 16,000 miles and three years old and never stopped until traded it in at 100,000 miles! But that wasn't the point. I loved it so much that despite everything I bought a new 'nosejob' Multipla 6 weeks ago.

You will find more reliable cars out there, but you and the kids will love it to bits. Buy, buy, buy....... (y)

I got mine from new, (2000) and the only problems I had was a faulty master cylinder, fixed under warranty. Also my car was recalled to have coil springs replaced again this was done free, and noticed the battery cable was routed wrong and breaking, so shortened it myself. I haven't had any other major problems, but then I always do the main things myself, use fully synthetic oil, get regular steam cleaning. I guess it's hit and miss, I had a Metro for 10 years without one problem, while others had never-ending problems. I cried when I sold it to upsize to the Multipla. Just make sure that the car you get has a full service history, and if the timing belt was changed when it should have been 72,000 mlies or 6 years, whichever comes first. The problem with most modern cars now is there is all these sensors for engine management, and are liable to fail. They are not cheap to get repaired at a dealer, but if they are needed you can buy them cheap on ebay, and fit them yourself, or get a local garage to fit them.

That all sounds pretty good, dh should manage to fix the niggly bits ( it would cost more to fix the bits I broke if I tried) and the rest sounds fairly similar to any other car, its a matter of luck isnt it. Except for the get out now, lol! I love the fact that there is a cult status associated with it, do people wave at each other like in beetles?

(y) Yes, uglybug owners always wave frantically at each other. You will be hit by an asteroid if you don't wave back, it's in the constitution! However, us nosejob owners are not as yet getting the reciprocative wave yet....

We have had ours for 3yrs now and its coming up to 87k,its a 2001 1.9JTD ELX.Lower pulley went, then a sensor and now front pads and discs, drop links and anti roll bar bushes.Normal things to expect at that mileage, and now the clutch is on its way out.
Do all my own work can not afford to pay someone else, very easy car to service but not looking forward to doing the clutch.Heard stories that you should replace dual mass flywheel when you do clutch,i wont be out my price range, got fiat clutch for £120 mega bucks for someone else to fit.
Sunroofs leak, mirrors sometimes have a mind of there own think the electrics are the weak point from owning ours.Still love it tho,and because do all my own work not really cost us that much over the 3yrs.Just replaced 2 tyres only £34 each, you can buy cheap parts my front pads and dics kit only £45 to my door.
This is a brill site for help and tips has i have found out, fiat say you have to replace the anti roll bar complete around £150. Just prize the carries open and there is a block on ebay selling the rubbers £29.99.If you browse through this site you will come across the common problems, but we just love the car cheap to run too.(y)

The first thing i noticed when driving mine was the inability to get angry:) it just made me feel happy being in the thing tis funny but if the get the ugly/better one you know what i mean.

Mines being done on Monday by Mr Clutch for £350 which I thought was quite reasonable. Certainly better than our local clutch specialist who quoted between £500 & £750

Nooooooooo not mr clutch!!!!!!!!! do a search on the forum dont do it my freind.
