A short time ago, I tracked down the mystery rattles that have plagued my Uno Turbo since I bought it, over three years ago!

It didn't take much to find them, to be honest - though a couple of years back I poked around underneath - found the fuel pump secured with cable ties (its rubber mountings were OK, so I think someone was trying to eliminate it as a possible rattle...) but couldn't find any rattle in the exhaust system or the handbrake cables, etc.

Actually, 'rattle' is an understatement: more a prolonged clattering over any less-than-smooth surface, with a clacking sound from the tailgate. Tightening up the catch just produced the result of the tailgate popping open during a journey... embarrassing...

Anyway - here's the answer:

The tailgate hinges do tend to wear Alex, those on yours look rather bad! I also find that when they wear the inner lip at the top of the tailgate rubs against the roof :bang:

And is that a loose brake pad in the rear caliper causing the rattles?

I managed to cure my rattles the other week. Finally fitted my new JVC CD player - 50W x 4 which now brings out the best in the 6x9's fitted in the rear quarters. Turn up the volume, et voila. No more rattles! :p

Kinda reminds me of a dentists campaign and the dangers of not brushing your teeth.......................M.

I wonder if my tailgate rattles, i know something did/does from the back and i could never put my finger on it! :chin:

Yeah, happily no panel damage, but I think it jumps around when driving... I have painted the replacement hinges off an Uno 45. Even though they're a different design (Turbo ones have a stop-pin to prevent over-opening) I don't think there'll be a problem since the strut limits the opening. Well on one side, at least.

No - actually. It's four loose brake pads in the rear calipers. ;)
I can't understand why they're made so slack, but they are supposed to have springs to take up the free play. I've got some new pads fitted now (we'll see how long before all the springs disappear), and all the clattering has stopped. The Uno is almost quiet - and that's with no headlining, no back seat, no boot floormat...

I have a similar motive :)
The plan is to get all the major rattles silenced and generally quieten the car down a bit (maybe a little more soundproofing), ready for the installation of my audio gear bought over a year ago but still not fitted . I started making the subwoofer box today... I'll post a thread showing its construction, as soon as it's a box and not merely a few circles of MDF. Taken about six hours so far, but it's going to be special ;)

Quick reply to a quick question :)
New pad is on the right. Note the disturbing decrease in braking area...
