My wife's 2002 Punto has a mystery patched area in the scuttle. This is below the wiper motor and extends to the left hand drain tube. Does anybody know what the purpose of this stuff is? The substance is approx. 2mm thick, regularly waterlogged after rain and breaking up with age. The photo is taken with the camera's left edge almost touching the bottom of the scuttle, pointing towards the driver's side. The patching shown is almost hidden by the wiper motor when looking from above. Any helpful comments appreciated.

I think it is to stop the leaves on that surface so you collect them and throw away.
That way the drain pipes (ducks) doesn't get clogged.
