Now then you lot. Just purchased a 93 Tipo, 1.4 s ie, off ebay. I had to tow it back to yorkshire, from south linconshire! owing to the fact that the water pump was shot. I have now replaced the water pump/belt, also the timing belt, spark plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter. Having driven it around the very hilly hills of West Yorkshire, i now realise that she needs hanbrake looking at. Although she passed her test only 2 months ago? the hanbrake has no effort whatsoever? Will take the rear wheels off next weekend, me thinks it could be a rear wheel brake cylinder that is leaking, and contaminated the shoes? More expense :-(. But the real issue is, that when she is cold! she has this slight knocking noise? just like my uno did in 97. Once warmed up, she is singing like a canary :) and totaly quite upon fearce accelaration :) My question is, what causes this fiat phenomenom? It has worsened since i changed the oil. Not too worried about it, as i am a mechanic. But any little fiat experiance would help. Regards. Hady.

Now on the 1.4 bravo/a engines which are 12v they have a very bad habbit of wiping out camshafts due to the bad oil feed to the cam ..not sure if is the same engine on the tipo but could be a starting point for you to start with in your investigation..welcome to the forum a trip to the tipo section should clear it up for you ..(y)

tipo 1.4 is the old lampredi block so pretty much bomb proof and completely unrelated to the dismal 12v. dunno about the noise though.

have you checked the handbrake is adjusted properly? it's got a nut under the cover on the handle which can be adjusted. the handbrake on mine was rubbish anyway and on a hill you'd have to pull it right up and leave it in first gear.

hehehe, thats what i am having to do at the moment, the old full lever, and leave in first. however, fiats are great in the sense that you can just take of the brake drum, then not have to re adjust your rear wheel bearing afterwards :) So should only take abouts 15 minutes for each wheel to check. Thanks anyways guys. Didnt know that the lampredi engine was bomb proof? I wouldnt want to test it to it's limits, to prove it too :).

i wouldn't push it too far as it's not a 'safe' engine and also relies on a cambelt. but in my experience it likes nothing more than a good thrash.
though i think in the turbo form its has a fair few problems though but thats different lol.
either way tipo's are hugely practical cars, loads of space and can be good fun. *sigh* i want my tipo back lol

I have noticed that the engine is racey :-( And i hate treating cold engines like motorcycle engines! As i live on a steep hill though, i have no option but to take it above 2000 RPM, on a freezing morning, to get off the estate. Cambelt not a problem, as i have fitted a new one. Hate that slight knock when it's cold though, between 1500 and 2500. No bloody idea what it could be.

My suspicions were right, it was the offside cylinder that had popped. Nevermind, i bought newbies for both sides, and a new set of shoes, cleaned the mess up, installed all new components, and now the handbrake, and brakes have not worked as good since 1993 :) Cant smile wide enough lad. I did adjust that hanbrake nut though, to make totaly lock on the 3rd notch. Happy days boys.
