Hi every one....I have an 03 multipla diesel 100k miles which recently started knocking quite baddly....i towed it home and noticed the harmonic balancer was hanging off! i removed it started it but still knocked...i suspected big end so dropped the sump removed the end caps only to find little or no wear to the bearings ...i then removed the mains caps, these showed 20% wear ....i'm now in limbo to what the problem is, i considered a lifter may have collasped....but what of the front pully?? any ideas? many thanks.....bryan

Hi,

very common on diesel fiat engine, it will be the front pulley that has collapsed, the pulley is a vibration damper and is a metalastic design which means it is two metal parts bonded with rubber, the rubber breaks down and the engine sounds like the crank is trying to jump out. Fiat charge around 75 quid for them but try shop4parts they are usually a lot cheaper and genuine part as well.

Harmonic balancer= vibration dampener, so I guess that's already been ruled out....what about the other end.... dual mass Flywheel or clutch
just thought
BTW have you tried the old 'listen through a screw driver' at various parts of the engine, might help you narrow it down to a location. (y)

replaced the front pully and replaced sump oil etc started rattled like mad?? ahhhh help!!!
