Just fitted this, looks gr8 :D

Felt a bit guilty when I was shortening the gear shaft, like I was hurting my baby.

I'll update my website over the weekend.

Feels a bit strange but that is probably just the different texture and shape.

Can't notice any difference due to shortening shaft, the new knob may sit higher. I may take another 20mm off later, once i've driven around for a week.

Hi there,

Photos please!

Also, got any info about the handbreak/gear gaiters and knobs etc. please??

I'm thinking of getting the Race-X Chrome Gear Surround & Black Leather Gaiter 'combo' from Direct Car Parts, but am not sure how easy (and neat looking) it would be to fit?
Will I need gear shaft sleeve with this gaiter? I'm thinking of the Richbrook Uni-Hex gear knob if that helps (ebay have one with Fiat badge on).

And what about the handbreak? Any "normal" one do? Any ideas on handbrake handle to match the gear knob? Recommondations please.

TIA,

Hi,
Check out www.dave-cummings.co.uk/cars

I'll update pics tomorrow with new g/k.

Handbrake was a nightmare. Had to stich in a gusset from the old gaiter. Not sure if I can fit an aftermarket handle yet, so haven't cut off the old one yet.

Gearstick is a doddle though, existing knob just pulls off.

Not been able to find any surrounds for gear or h/brake yet, let me know if you do.:D

Here's a link to the surround I found: http://dcp-shop.co.uk/catalog/default.php?cPath=142_233_238 I'm thinking of getting the 2nd one (Race-X, with the gaiter in black). What do you think?

I just pulled off the gear knob today. Put it back on (so I can drive the car), but at least I know now :)

Now I'm not sure if a surround would look good though. I mean would the surround replace the plastic "base" thing, or go on top?

I'm gonna pull of the handbrake thing a bit later to see.

I feel lost :(

EDIT... Dawn you beat me to it. ;) Thanks :D End Edit

I've emailed DCP with a query to see if they'll fit my P97 (original style Marea).

The chrome surrounds fit on top of everything, but i'm not sure if they replace the plastic surround or fit onto it. It should look great with the black gaiter.

The handbrake surround is a similar fit, just a long, thin and twisted profile on mine. Because the console slopes down the handle is very short with no neck between the hinge mechanism and handle.

That is why my gaiter goes over the handle. If I can get a new handle to fit I'll have to either modify the gaiter again or paint and refit the original.

That gear knob looks good, nice one :)

The centre console on my car is exactly like yours. I have a feeling that gear surround from DCP is for the newer style consoles. I would be interesting to hear what DCP reply to you.

Thanks, a bit more thinking required for me I think...

you will probably find that the gear surround they are talking about is for Bravo/a and not Mareas at all, been down this road years ago, the Marea has a complex and curved surround which is expensive to do.
My cars on the members motors bit of this site including interior shots showing my Momo stuff, check it out its under the heading Modded Marea 20v Weekend or something. Its looking a bit shabby now but will be undergoing more surgery when funds allow.

Thanks very much Notorious, that helps loads.

Now I need to find the part number for the original gear surround 'cos I've broken it...

Hi Notorious,
Spooky but I have just recommended that thread to someone else, still in my paste buffer. http://www.fiatcentral.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=566 no momo shots though :(

btw polecat, your "Blue interior lights", what are they exactly? Some sort of neons or replaced the ones by the sunroof?

Ah, brilliant idea!

I think I'm gonna look into some sort of interior lighting kit (LEDs or neons). I'd get red colour though to match everything :)

Looks good, but the handbrake? How can you get it off?!

Notorious,
Looks great. Did you take all the small diameter rod off the gear shaft?
Can you put up a quick guide on how you got the original h/brake off and any problems with fitting the Momo.
Is the h/brake alloy or airmetal, and is that an alu dash kit?:D[8D]
Lol, you coming to the Notts meet:D

Right here goes chaps....
The original h/brake is a pig to remove after trying several methods to remove it, eventualy I just got a stanley knife and sliced along the top of the h/brake along its entire length, from the rear of the car to the front, I then peeled the original h/brake to each side and removed it. Basically the plastic one is a one piece item which is glued in place, bear in mind it make take some getting off.
With cover now removed we have the metal shaft of the h/brake exposed, clean off all remaining glue and crap.
You then take the Momo replacement and trial fit it, if it slides on easily then the shaft is clean enough. A tip here is to use some washing detergent on the shaft to make it slide on easier.
There should be an adapter for the Momo item to fit the Marea shaft correctly, this is basically a square section rubber ring.
Place the rubber ring on the exposed h/brake shaft and then place the Momo item on, it may be a tight fit. Check that the button can now be operated easily and will engage/disengage correctly.
If as on mine the button does not operate correctly then get some wet and dry paper and softly enlarge the hole on the square section rubber adapter. I would rather do this than on the h/brake as if you sand the h/brake you make expose metal which will the rust..
When happy that everything fits and works correctly then tighten the grub screws on the Momo item. I found that by undoing them first so that they were all just flush with the inside section of the Momo one you could then count the number of turns when doing up the others, thus making sure it will all sit evenly and correctly.

Hope this helps, not sure I think mine is an ally one I got it when they first came out about 3 years ago now.
When I did my gearstick there is a flange half way down that had to be sanded to allow the ally shaft kit to fit correctly, but when I did this the actuall gearstick shaft separated into 2 pieces so I decided to shorten it aswell, I the got a metal rod cut to size and fitted it inside both section and glued the shaft together with Araldite. Then fitted the ally shaft cover and Momo Combat gearstick.
The gaiters are all original Fiat ones and with a bit force were refitted.
I also fitted a push button start to the car, its the the round ally button above and to the right of the gearstick, I love this to death.
The dash was removed and sprayed silver by me.
This car is now a bit worse for wear and will under go some surgery when funds allow, doubt I will be coming to Notts meet as it depends on where work send me.. But will try.

Notorious,

Many thanks for an excellent reply[8D]:D

I now have the confidence to buy one myself. Your h/brake is prob alloy as the airmetal one is fairly new, i'll likely get an alloy one myself:D

I've been looking at dash film and kits but not got round to it yet. Still not really decided on what colour I like. Your dash looks great and the starter button sounds cool, i might just steal that idea[}:)]

Would you mind if I used the info in your post to put up a sticky faq for other users?

Thanks again.:D
