Only problem with the snow so far is that I went to replace our rear wiper blade, to help clear the snow/salt/muck off the rear screen
Lifted the wiper off the rear window and our rear wiper arms spring has rusted and has now busted [then fallen off!]

So I'm guessing I'd need to buy a whole new wiper arm? :bang:

Don't suppose anyone has got a spare spring lying about ? ;)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a problem with my rear wiper that I just don't understand.

When I press the wiper button, it works like a charm, backwards and forwards. However, if the arm is not in the resting position when I press the button again, it seems to go at half power, and seems to struggle to get back to the resting position. It is almost like it is 'jumping' or sticking on the glass.

What mechanism causes the rear wiper arm to return to its resting position? Is it residual power, or is it the aforementioned spring?

Neither. There will be a switch/ contact on one of the gears in the motor drive box. When the motor is running and the dashboard switch is turned off, the motor will keep turning until the switch in the drive box is triggered whereby it will cut the power and cause the wiper to park. Remember that the motor always turns in the same direction and that it's the drive box that uses a mechanism to make the wiper go from side to side. Therefore the drive gear will have a contact on it at something like the 12 o'clock position, so every time it turns 360 degrees it will encounter the contact, which will be the park position.

Doesn't explain your problem though! But it sounds as if your wiper doesn't always park correctly?

If your spring is rusted.. hows other ones gonna be?
Just wondered if you could get just a new spring
But then again I guess not

As a cheap [free] temp fix I tried using some shock cord....it didn't work :p
Thanks for the eBay links
The one as BIN from AceParts looks a bargain....so I've bought one

Ucof it sounds like you need to strip the motor and clean up the brushes/contacts and regrease it
NOT a FIAT but an old MGA 'how to' here...just to give you a bit of an insight of how they work/look inside
MGA WIPER MOTOR REBUILD

It parks perfectly well, and always returns to the resting position.
It just sounds horrible and looks wonky if you press the button when then wiper is not already in that resting position.

I might take a camera phone video tomorrow and you can see what I mean.

could be a bad earth connection????
I think the contact for the 'park' works by earthing out

Awwwww my favourite style, I'm SOOOOO jealous!
Why are my chairs and sofa all scratchy wool-knit material, not so nice on naked skin...!

Off topic FOR SURE... though I received no report :D

I found the retarded scribblings of a cack-handed 3 year old, and a blue Crayola felt pen :D

The cushions don't seperate from the sofa though :(

Ewwww.. those are my least favourite type of sofa. Itchy and as far from "wipe clean" as possible. :(

I also have a huge faux-leather beanbag, though this can get quite sweaty if sat in for extended periods of time. :(

Anyway, I'm sure I left some biscuits around here somewhere :)
