Technical Mk 2 punto noisey on start up

Hi,i have mk2 punto 1.2 8 valve,it has 113k miles,lately when i start from cold,theres a loud humming noise from engine,could it be water pump,or maybe loose tensioner on cambelt,it goes away after about 2 mins of driving,only happens on start up from cold,any ideas??????????????

Nothing definitive. You might try using an engine stethescope (about a tenner from Machine Mart or your local factor, a handy diagnostic tool and fun for playing doctors and nurses.........) to isolate the sound better.

Disconnect the alternator belt to rule the alt out. Any service history? The timing belt and tensioner should be changed as a pair every 3 or 4 years: some folk change the water pump at about 60k or so as a precaution.

could be alternator - after first start up the battery does take a wack - so the alternator works hard to start recharging the battery
