t 99 hlx 1.6. now and again my car starts missing like f**k. i've tried all the injector cleaners. it starts missing, lasts for about 2 days, then all of a sudden stops. could be ok for 2-3 weeks, and comes again. when it starts, the injector dash light doesnt come on!!!!power is affected a bit, not much.when it's missing, and when i stop after a journey, the exhaust makes a tinny clanking noise. could the cat be stopping fumes escaping, resulting in back pressure of some sort, or is a faulty injector??
HELP!!! thanks

i had a similar problem and had a garage look at it, they were going to do a pressure test, but in the end up it turns out it was the HT leads!!
When was the last time u changed them and ur plugs?

12-14 months ish!!only done about 7-8k since then.i took it to the local garage, they hooked it up to the diagnostic computer.there was about 10 faults in the ECU memory.guy said they could've been there since day 1.he erased them all, and i'm going back tomorrow/thursday to check for new faults.he said it could be the coil pack or lambda sensor.

Faults clear themselves after a time.

No injector light = no fault detecable by the ECU.

Lambda is an easy check for the mechanic.

went back yesterday, after he deleted the memory. injector #1 is shagged!!!! had a price for the part, £63+VAT and labour on top. bill should be about £100.not bad i reckon. what do you guys think????

Injectors fail on the 1.6's its well explained on foatforum.com how to fix/replace these with scrap yard parts for very little money.

You'd have to be a raving retard to replace them with parts from a scrapyard.

Pre 2000/2001 injectors are known to fail, nothing to do with Fiat as they were made by someone else and are used on other cars. You need to change all 4 or it will never run quite right.

A raving retard? Really, your talking 4 injectors at £50 a time, rather than £5 each. Depends of course if your doing the work yourself or paying for it to be done. If paying then new parts, if not then save some cash.

Many, many people on fiatforum have done it with very few re occurrences.

Jug has some excellent advise on the matter.

There is a lot of missinformation about the 1.6 injectors.

I replaced all mine about 6 years ago, not a single problem since. The 'unreliable' 1.6 injector was only up to a certain date, the manufacturer re-designed it as other cars were having problems too.

As for them being a common fault and really unreliable, most of the people having problems on the Fiatforum have 7-9 year old cars, so thats not doing too badly. My first one failed when the car was just over 3 years old, now thats something to moan about :) Changed the lot about 6 years ago and have put about 80k on them without a hitch. Very reliable engine!

Sorry i should have said, injectors are more prone to failure on the 1.6, wasnt saying that they ALL fail, although it kind of reads like that.

Using a multimeter most folks on FF seem to fix the problem for under £20, obviously ideally you'd replace them all with new ones, and a new fuel rail too. But not much point if you can DIY it.

And yes its usually the older 1.6's that have the problem, as you say the cars are all getting on a bit now.

Its always older 1.6s. Even the youngest is going to be 6 now, but the later ones did not suffer from the actual dodgey injectors.

Like I said, I've BTDTGTTS. 126k and at 10 years old my 1.6 is still going strong.

they are made by webber and as tom said the mk1 was the only sufferer of dead injectors early in life.

Ash, you don't give away details like that ;) Its not like its hard to find out, being embossed on the side of the injector along with the part number :)
