Good morning
I am turning to you all for help
I have a 2006 grande punto 1.4 77cv petrol
the car lost power and the engine light came on. I had a "diagnostic" done and I've changed the lambda probes
but the car has problems with idling and voids (misfires?) at low revs
ps I have already changed the spark plug coil module and the spark plugs. also the throttle body work done some time ago and distribution (6 months ago)
I did a various "tests" on the sensors. everything is "ok". But the check engine light is always on. I cleaned the injectors
if anyone has any advice...
thanks to everyone
Let's break down maintenance and "diagnostic" mistakes (not much was done really, just random checks + "parts cannon" method).
1. Loss of power and the check engine. What's the fault code? Use proper Fiat software (FES,
MES, AlfaOBD)!
2. What "diagnostic" was done, by who? WHY both lambda probes? Have you checked the exhaust gas (gas analyzer)? It's as BASIC as compression.
3. Rough idle and "voids" (misfire?). Again, basic live parameters (OBD2) would reveal a problem (probably). Spark advance, MAP sensor, injection and coil charge time, knock sensor, lambdas, air and fuel correction (%), timing (VVT) and so on. Both intake and exhaust systems must be good (no leaks). EVAP too.
4. What about BASIC maintenance? It's a 8V = valve clearance (lash) ever done? Exaust 0,40 mm, Intake 0,30 mm. Plus camshaft lobes lift (9,50 mm).
5. Changed the sparkplugs. And what? Show us the old ones (how do they look, any anomalies)? What about high voltage ("tension") wires/leads?
6. Why you mess with throttle body? What "work" was done to it? This is simple design (and easy to diagnose - if you have a clue, what to do).
7. "Distribution" (timing belt job)? Who did it? You or "pro" mechanic? Not so "pro" I guess... Check the timing (VVT1 position about 106 degrees, while VVT control is 0% at idle and camshaft real = desired position). Check the VVT solenoid valve (clean or not).
8. What "tests" on the sensors? Which ones? How? For example MAP sensor - how would you verify it? Describe the procedure/tools (vacuum gauge?).
9. Cleaned the injectors, OK. How about BASIC check like a fuel pressure (3,5 bar)?
10. Petrol/Gasoline only? Do you have LPG? Most of the time it is installed improperly and will eat the valves (faster if you don't adjust them).
FIRE family is 40+ years old. Easy engines (last ones like that on the planet, modern stuff is way more complicated, not DIY friendly).
Not much time left for us hobbyists, to train, exercise, experiment, collect tools. You must act and learn faster, no time to fool-around.
