Hitchin a ride
During the past 10 years we have racked up 250,000 miles in four Fiat Multiplas. We’ve carried everything from six adults in leg-stretching comfort, to wardrobes and even motorbikes. These underrated vehicles have been discontinued, so what can we buy instead? A Skoda Yeti is too small, and the internet seems riddled with horror stories about the poor economy of the Kia Sorento. What would you suggest? We don’t wish to spend more than £21,000 and want the car to be capable of a genuine 35mpg at least. JB, Hitchin

Try a Mazda5 1.6d TS2 (it has to be a TS2 to get sensible 205/45R16 tyres). This is one of the most comfortable cars in existence. It handles brilliantly, has a very well matched engine and transmission and mine returned 48.1mpg over 11,000 miles. You could also consider a Renault Grand Scenic 1.6dCi 130 and a Ford Grand C-Max 1.6 TDCi 115 (which has the same engine as the Mazda5). HJ, telegraph/motoring p.M6 2012/07/28
