General marea problems

Hi all, I'm new here so please be gentle.
I have a 1998 S reg weekend estate, 1.9 td 100 elx.

My problems started when I got my cousin to change the timing belt a few weeks ago.
He brought it back, parked it up but when I went to go to work the next day it wouldnt start. After alot of turning the car over it started.
Got a can of easy start and it will start ok with that. Once it is running and warm it will start by itself and runs fine.
Consequently the starter motor is about done in now.
so my question to you is, does anyone know why I have starting probs and regarding the starter motor, will another go straight on from any fiat diesel e.g. 2.4 jtd etc.
Also I am having the glowplugs changed as the light was flashing after starting so I thought this may be the cause.

I take it that your cousin is handy with a spanner and not like a Fiat dealership. If the timing is 1 or 2 teeth out could maybe cause poor starting

Could be that you have a problem either with your plugs or the glowplug heater relay. The light flashing can mean one of both of these components are knackered. Try turning the system on waiting for the light to go out and trying to hear a click from the relay, then try to start.

My JTD lights flashes although the JTD engines don't really need any heat to start so it's not a problem.

The starter motor and plugs I think are different on the JTD's although i'm not 100% on that

He is a mechanic, but done the belt in his garden 1 sunday, for a beer.
is the glow plug relay under the battery, or near the bulkhead.

hi - dont know about your main problem , but i delayed changing the glow plugs on mine - and the starter motor was subsequently burnt out - so dont put the glo plugs off. I dont know about model interchangability for starter motor.

I changed 2 plugs myself but cant get to the other 2, Im gonna get them done this week. I was going to get a starter from a scrappy or ebay but theres not many 1.9 td100's about.

sounds like a compression problem, so timing is out slighty. a compression test will tell you what the situation is.
