Hi there and happy new year to everyone!! Have taken my punto back to the dealer i bought it from and they have put in a new "MAP" sensor...Can you tell me what this does? (in terms a blonde will understand please!!) Should my engine management light come on even tho this has been changed? It came beack on breifly during the week but hasn't come back on since (it had been stood for a few days)

Many thanks people :)

Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor is its full title.

Its a very important sensor for the engine. It monitors the pressure in the inlet manifold, this pressure will vary depending on engine rpm, throttle posisition, temperature etc. The ECU uses information from it to help work out how much fuel to put in, and when to spark.

The light coming on briefly, i wouldnt worry about.

Arc has given you a very good discription of what this is and does (y) we get this frequently with the stilo and is a common issue we have found that on our cars there are ECU and throttle body updates that should have been done to the early stilo's and once done this is cured [unless it actually was the MAP sensor that was gone]it may be worth while asking your dealer if there are any that should have been done for your Punto ..I dont know if this applies to your car but always worth checking out ..nothing ventured nothing gained and welcome to here (y)

Thanks so much for the reply, i am a little wiser as to it's job! Will keep an eye on it and hopefully it will stay off. Car seems to be running fine at the mo and isn't using half a much petrol as it was before. Think my dealer warrnaty has run out, if it happens again, are they obliged to sort it out or will yhey do anything not to do it?

:)
