I decided to purchase an electronic ignition system and have it installed by my local garage when my 87' X1/9 was in for MOT - in the hope this would help with emissions test and general running.

My garage installed the kit but could not get it to work unless the ballast resistor was removed.

They tried everything they could think of, and some things suggested by a couple of owners I asked, but without success. This included wiring it from starter and earthed directly to battery. It would not run with old coil.

I know enough technical info to be dangerous so apologies if I have not given sufficent/clear info. Lumenition were not much use but I can't believe I am the first owner to suffer this problem - once we know what the problem is!

It is frustrating that the car runs perfectly with the Lumenition system installed excluding the resistor, in the knowledge that doing this will in time fry the coil - at £40 a pop this is to be avoided.

I'd be most grateful for any thoughts or personal experiences.

I've been trying to help Jim with this problem and I'm as stumped as he is.

The system is, fundamentally, working - since it runs correctly without the ballast resistor so ultimately there can't be too much wrong.

The ideas of faulty power supply and earthing have been covered to no avail and there really isn't much else to go wrong as the lumenition ignition system is essentially self contained other than a power supply and earth.
