Lost red key replacments

how much does this usually cost? My "friend" mechanic told me not to trust anyone other than a dealer doing this?? Ive got a Mk 1 punto 98

"trust" a dealer, ok so would you not trust a locksmith(high street guy) with your house keys?

I'm asuming he means on the complexity of it, do you need a red key or just another blue key? Or is your key code light on and your car wont start?

A dealer will tell you you need a new locks, key set, ecu bit etc etc, well more than your cars worth. So yea i'd be sure they'd do a cracking job but at a price so high you could have bought another car.

a dealer is the one place you really cant trust with this type of job, their approach is always the same, replace everything. a mk1 punto is rarely worth as much as a dealer will charge for a job like this, often £500+.

if you dont go to a dealer you have other options, such as decoding your ecu, which is far cheaper (£100)

Its a red key I need initially. I have 3 blues but housing is broke on 2. It was mainly for piece of mind and if I want to sell the car on at a later date like. Its my first car so im stressin my butt off lol. I see what you mean about not going with the dealer.

Are there risks with decoding the ecu? Pardon my ignorance but cud it result in me ending up tons more problems or my car just not starting one day?

there is only 1 risk, the car can get stolen easily. a decoded ecu will ignore the immob, so your car will start hotwired.

i've never once heard of any other problems.

if you dont need a red key at this moment then dont bother thinking about it, just make sure you always have at least 2 blue keys.
