Replaced an engine in a Mk2 4x4 a couple of months ago and thought you all may be interested to see why..........

I have no idea why the conrod failed and punched a hole through the block, at first I thought the owner may have ran the engine dry of oil but there was still some in the sump.

FIRE engines are supposed to be good for 250k + and until this my experience of them certainly supports that claim.

Would you believe this engine still started and ran!!! Not enough power to actually move the car though.

I think that what probably happened was that the big end gave up first, either the bolts snapped or came undone, the engine may have been rebuilt by a previous owner as I can't believe the robots would have done anything wrong. :p. The loose conrod then wedged between the crank and block causing the conrod to snap and the block to - well you can see what happened.

Never managed to blow up a fire - did manage to thoroughly kill a 903 once.

Probably the most resilient engine I have ever seen was a Citroen DS21 unit that lost its water somewhere between Stirling and Trawsfynydd, yet drove home perfectly well without any sign of distress...however it locked solid two days later!

Impressive  Have never seen a fire with the leg out. But I also have my contribution to the "kill spread" of the fiat engines. This is a piece of block of my fiat 128 coupe revvy 1300 ohc lampredi. Blue hammereite did not save him at nearly 9000 rpm :D

Have saved this piece of engine, I am sentimental;) Inside the green circle is a visible mark, where conrod has hit the block
