Lack of power at high revs

Hello all...

Got a 53 Fiat Punto 1.3 Multijet Diesel (Great Little Car)

When i give it some potatoes the engine management light comes on briefly and i have a lack of power.
This is only solved by turnning the car off and restarting it..... Until i give it more spuds again!!!

I have seen a few people with the same problem but no solution to the problem.

I am not a 'Minty' of this world so please talk to me like a baby.....

could be any number of things, i've never experienced this in a fiat, mainly cus im on my first one and its a new one so hopefully wont for a while either. My old corsa did a similiar thing, it was something to do with water or moisture getting into pesky places. Does it do it more frequently when wet?
