Just swopping parts will not cure the problem.

Proxi-Alignment is need, the new key also needs reprogramming to the car.

Not all parts are compatable, for example, later models use better transponders in the keys so they are not compatible with the Body Computers from earlier models. Earlier model part numbers begin with a 4, later models begin with a 5, I think.

Are you able to read the error codes from the Body Computer relating to the immobiliser?

Thanks for your reply - The reason for swapping the ECU was random errors being generated, cam sensor, crank sensor, manifold pressure sensor, pedal position sensor, repalced all of these and still getting the error - car ran until warm and then throws errors, auto electrician diagnosed ecu so replaced ecu, key, key reader and body computer from a working car but now wont read the key hopefully this will give you some background as to why i went down the ecu route are there any other componants relating to the key code reader that i need to replace thanks again

Random errors are usually a result of a bad earth connection or a failing battery.

But as you had an autoelectrician diagnose it as a faulty ECU I guess he was also able to read the fault codes from the body computer after he had swopped all the parts, so what were they and did he proxi-align all the new parts into the car?

ok thanks shady how do i proxy align the key ?

Proxi-Alignment is needed, the new key also needs reprogramming to the car.

You can't Proxi-Align a key, it has to be reprogrammed to the Body Computer by Fiat..

Proxi-Alignment is needed first so that all the new and old parts can communicate with each other properly. A registerd version of FiatECUScan(http://www.fiatecuscan.net) can do this for you.

Reprograming the Transponder in the key to the car can only be done by Fiat. The key code from the vehicle you took the Body Computer from will also be required so Fiat can access the security part(immobiliser) of the Body Computer.

It looks as though i am going to scrap this car - the amount of money it has soaked up is staggering but if i proxy align it will that enable the key to be read - i do not understand why it needs anything as all componants came off a working car - alfa romeo's are so much easier lol . can you please advise why i would need to re-program the key - thank you for your time and advice

eml is orange security symbol is also orange flashes a few times and then stays on

If the EM and Immo lights are orange you should be able to use the emergency start proceedure to start the car. If this works and the car starts you will need to read the fault codes in the Body ECU and the Engine ECU.

"U1600" usually means you need to have the key reprogrammed to the car.

If the EM light turns red there's a more serious problem, failed commponent for example.

Emergency start procedure, you'll need the Key Code(security code) for the new Body ECU.

This procedure will only start the engine once. If the engine is switched off, you will need to repeat the whole procedure to start it again.

The procedure will only work if your car has an immobiliser problem that's preventing it from starting.

  1. Switch the ignition on (MAR position) but do not start the engine.
  2. Hold the accelerator pedal down. The engine management warning light should illuminate for about 8 seconds then go out.
  3. Release the accelerator pedal and get ready to count the flashes of the warning light.
  4. Count the number of flashes that corresponds to the first digit of the securuty code, then press the accelerator until the warning light comes on for about 4 seconds and goes off, then release the pedal.
  5. The warning light will start flashing again. After it has flashed the number of times that corresponds to the second digit of the code, press the pedal to the floor until the warning light comes on for about 4 seconds and goes off.
  6. Repeat the same process for the remaining 3 digits of the code.
  7. Rapid flashing of the warning light for about 4 seconds confirms that the procedure has been carried out successfully. The engine should start by turning the key from MAR to AVV.
  8. If the warning light stays on, turn the ignition off and repeat the procedure from step 1.
Good luck.

thanks shadyman - will give it a try monday you have been brilliant thanks again:)(y)

I have no idea that something like this was programmed into the key. Fiat amazed me again. :))

Anyway, chances that the immobilizer will be faulty are very slim, and there's an even slimmer chance that you will have your key code with you when this happens. But at least there's a way. :)
