Does anyone have any advice for stopping a battery from draining in cold weather. We had temperatures of -17 last night, with a prediction for tonight of -25. So other than buying a battery to match the temperature, is there anything else we can do. Cover the battery with a cover for example.

Thanks

a healthy battery/charging system should be able to handle it with daily use

A battery that is fit for purpose should retain enough charge to start a car in good condition, provided the charging system is good. However you could connect up a constant trickle charge conditioner if the car is not being used often. Make sure you have no constant drain on the battery when the car is left idle, 20 - 25mA is a normal kind of quiescent current drain, if a boot light, glove box light or aftermarket sound system is installed there may be quite a bit more draining from the battery when the car remains un-used.

Same as Moscow (–9C) hereabouts last night.

I used to make a polystyrene overcoat for mine – but admit haven’t done with current (5m old) battery. Some batteries were supplied complete with a thin layer of polystyrene shrink-wrapped on – but haven’t seen that in recent years.

.

the one i fitted last night to mine is rated down to minus 18^C

know most vauxhalls now come with a foam wrap fitted to them (scrap yard perhapse?)

I heard Opel OE batteries have good reputation, up with the likes of Berga & Moll - but no idea who makes (?)

.

get some polystyrene round it old packaging from tv video etc take off in morning so as not to let engine warm it up
