Just joined - in need of help

Hi. I just joined and have posted a query in the punto forum. I got an old 2000 mk2 from the brother that wasn't going and he didn't want to spend any money on it. I got it going and was on the way to the NCT (irish mot) when it overheated! Blown head gasket. Took head to be skimmed and was told it had been skimmed below tolerance. Skimmed anyway and replaced. Now engine cranks but won't fire. Any ideas on what should happen with an over skimmed head? Other possibility is my timing is off but I've checked it twice now and it seems ok. A bit stuck.....

Have you put the bottom pulley on wrong? if you do it will not start.there is a hole on the pulley which lines up with a tit on the cogged pulley
