JTD knocking on startup then going off

Hi all,
the 2001 JTD 100 is knocking each time i start her, seems to be coming from the bottom of the engine. If you rev her for a little it goes off. Also when i was having a look before i took the oil cap off and it sprayed a little and the knock stopped.

Does anyone know what this could be? is she safe to drive?

Sounds like the oil is not getting around the engine quick enough when you start it up.

Once reved, oil gets round and stops the knocking.

When was the last time it was serviced?

Could it be a blocked oil filter?

Serviced like a year ago, i was thinking its an oil prob, will change the oil and filter but im thinking (as the car has seized before) that the pump maybe faulty, would a diagnostic show this up?

has to be something to do with that,some premptive work needed i think,i would replace the pump,and filter and oil and give the engine a good dose of engine flush a few mile before the oil change.
Try that and see,every little helps.

If you suspect the oil pump it would be better get an oil pressure test guage and see what its doing. change the filter and make sure to fill it before you put it on. If the noise is more of a clanging sound, check the rubber damped crankshaft pulley. when this goes it makes noise at idle.. A diagnostic will not tell you anything in this case.

Does it sound like it could also be the big end bearings? knocking to start then being cusioned by oil and going off?

the mechanic couldnt get an idea , he reckoned it may be the cambelt but is going to probe further on sat. Any more guesses lads?

if it were big ends they would knock all the time in tune with the revs regardless. also with big ends they knock more when the engine gets hot as the oil becomes thinner.
