Pami, 5 pot is the lazy way of saying 5 cylinder petrol engine (there is a diesel 5 pot, but are hard to find and no where near as common as the petrol)
as for whats better to buy, its alot to do with luck of the draw, if i didnt drive so hard my 1.2 would be right up there relaibility wise i would have thought, but ive killed god knows how many boxes (well i do know but its depressing typing it)
the diesel will cost a bit more to buy if your fussy about age and condition of interior and bodywork etc as they hold their value a bit better than their petrol counter parts, and yes deisel is a bit more expencive per liter (i think, never look at the cost, just fill up) but when you can get 600 miles from a tank day in day out you cant argue with that, and they arent slow cars really even standard. if you want a diesel bravo, go for a later (t reg or on) mk2, as these were the jtd diesels and not the td, so better performance and economy, with generally less technical woes. main things to look for are a flat spot or hesitation around the 2.5 - 3 k revs up, if its doing this its more than likely the maf sensor (circa £150 to replace iirc) the big benefit aswell is that diesles run forever and a day, so dont be put of so much by mileage (100k is perfectly reasonable to say the least on a well maintained car) so its more maintanance you need to look at, oil changes and so on, if its good and the cambelts been done your onto a winner normally. there are planty of good cars out there so dont pay too much for one and be picky to an extent
