Technical JTD has developed a torque "hole"

It's just about due a service anyway, but I'm getting intermittent (though increasingly frequent) loss of power, noticeable when pulling away from stationary. This is resolved by giving it a big boot and using the clutch to get away at something approaching 3k revs.

Is this a known problem and one which I should expect to have resolved at a service?

try disconnnecting the maf sensor in the air inlet pipework, front of engine. If it works better, its your MAF sensor....

cant do any damage disconnecting it

I would say it's the dreaded EGR valve. Blank it off!
