Hi,
The auxiliary belt snapped on my brother's marea; bits then got into the cambelt and snapped this as well; fault was a worn auxiliary belt tensioner. Does cambelt failure on this engine always cause severe engine damage? If so is it cheaper to repair the damage or fit a replacement 2nd hand engine?
Any advice appreciated.

Interesting that the auxiliary belt damaged the cambelt, and scary. If you check the archives, yes its usually fatal and you need a new head to reurect the car. Timing seems to be big problem as well, again lots in the archives. Of all the threads giving advice I have only seen 1 where we got feedback about the result.

if it is a 20v engine i strongly suggest you check the timing belt cover has not warped and caused the aux belt damage.

a belt snap means bent valves so the head has to come off.

it is usually cheaper to replace the valves and refit the head.

20 valves in a JTD 110?

There are only 8 to replace so probably cheaper to get the head rebuilt. Hopefully it will still be straight and cheaper than finding a new engine.

had similar problem with my 105 jtd.
auxilary pulley got loose and aux belt broke , bits got jammed into the cambelt.

in my case , head was opened , lucky no engine damage, belt , waterpump replaced

no charges as it's was within the warrenty period

If the damage is caused by the valves hitting the pistons are the pistons not damaged as well?

you should check the piston faces, if they have marks where the valve cantact occured (especially indentations) it can mean the conrod (the rod that connects the piston to the crankshaft) is bent. if thats the case you'll have a loss of compression on that cylinder (reduced stroke). in worst cases the conrod can later snap (very bad), or the piston can seize if it end up sitting off centre on the cylinder, or the conrod's bearing may become noisey giving you a "bottom end tap". in most cases only the valve is damaged because it is so thin and easily bent.
