My 1.2 2004 panda started breaking down and cutting out, then it would not start and has been like that since Sunday. I towed it to a garage he had a look and plugged in his machine and said I needed a fiat dirernostick machine to do it, so I have towed it to a ex fiat dealer at the moment they have not solved it yet can any one help, they have said it's not the coils and it's only running on 2 cylinders any help could it be ecu
Thanks from JPR. Can any one help

Well, it could be the ECU.

It could equally well be a lack of compression (head gasket), ignition leads, or coil packs.

We'd need to know more.

If it's plain not starting, but is turning over, the first thing I'd look for are sparks and fuel. If neither TDC sensor (often, as the ECU uses the TDC sensor to determine if the engine is running, this will show no faults on a code reader).

You don't need the FIAT kit -- any old OBD reader will do.

Best posted in the Panda section. There is a list of ECU checks in the Guides (Punto 2/2b) which may be useful, too.

It depends which two cylinders it's running on. If it's running on either 1+4 or 2+3 then it's likely to be coil related. If the garage connects something called a noid light to the connecter on the affected coil and runs the engine then it should flash, if not then it is either the ECU at fault or the related wiring.

If you could find out what fault codes they are getting that would help. I presume you are miles from me (Staffs)?

Well I have had the ecu sent away and found that at fault it's only doing cylinders 1 and 4,
When the engine ran with only 1and 2 running could this have caused any more damage to any thing???

I have not been told the fault codes but I have just found out ecu is faulty but can be fixed but I am hoping when the car ran only on 2 calendars that no more damage was caused, I am in devon. If you have any info that would be great.

Should be Ok when repaired, although something usually causes the ECU to fail so may be worth changing the coils, leads and plugs anyway. I've had similar a number of times with Fiestas and it's usually caused by running them with a faulty coil, the ECU keeps upping the firing voltage to compensate but eventually burns out. Devon, eh? I'm in the Midlands but I have relatives in Dartmouth & Saltash

Possibly cooked the CAT by sending in unburnt fuel, but depends upon how much you let it run like that. Will find out come MOT if it causes an issue with the emissions or not.
